About Mailing Lists

A mailing list is a way for many people with a common interest to keep in touch with each other using Email. If you subscribe to a mailing list any Email sent to the list will be automatically sent on to all the other members of the list. A list may have only a few members or it may have many hundreds. Mailing lists are generally formed to provide a contact point for a particular subject or common interest.

A moderated list is one in which moderators (designated members of the list) allow only those members who have been 'approved' (i.e. qualify for membership) to subscribe to the list. So, for example the Lissencephaly mailing list is moderated by a number of individuals who check with new subscribers to ensure they are suitable candidates before they join the list. As moderated lists are closed to members only they are generally seen as private. Unmoderated lists allow any individual to join and hence may be seen as less private than a moderated list.
