The Midlands TUC Regional Council is concerned by the exploitation of temporary agency workers in the UK, who are afforded some of the lowest levels of protection in Europe, with no right to equal pay or terms and conditions, and no right to legal employment status.
This Regional Council is equally concerned by the Government’s persistence in obstructing the passage of the EU Draft Temporary Agency Workers Directive despite its commitment under the ‘Warwick Agreement’ in 2004 to help the Directive become law.
This conference agrees it is time to end the exploitation of UK agency workers and to introduce laws that give them the recognition they deserve and the equality to which they should be entitled to in a just society.
The Midlands TUC Regional Council AGM therefore calls on the Government to honour its commitment to lend support to help the Temporary Agency Workers’ Directive become law, and to introduce legislation in the UK that ensures agency workers receive equal pay and terms and conditions to permanent employees for equal work through Andrew Millar MP’s Private Members Bill – Temporary and Agency Workers (Equal Treatment) – and calls on all MP’s to support it.
