FC Torres 1 - Croydon Spartak 2

One game in and one defeat but the single goal margin goes someway to show how close this game really was.

The pitch was still hard although the previous nights rain meant for a fast a furious opening spell on the wet surface. Torres front line of big Chris and Rick found it hard to find space amongst a well organised and experienced defence. There were many familiar faces on the Croydon side although there seemed to be more attacking menace, especially from their midfield, this time around. They broke the deadlock midway through the first half with a deflected shot which fizzed around confusing Spine. This after three Torres players failed to tackle the twinkle-toed Croydon midfielder.

We failed to make any real chances except for a looping cross that had Paul and Big Chris tangled boot to head whilst both were unmarked.

The eventual winning goal came on the stroke of half time after another Beasant style goal kick bounced straight between our central defence (probably the only missed header all game) and were subsiquently punished by the on rushing forward.

Down but not out and after a half-time switch to find more width to attack the ageing Croydon fullbacks we began to create chances. Christians perseverance was soon rewarded after scrambling the ball over the line after Spartaks forward turned keeper eventually spilled a shot.

The comeback was there for the taking but not to be. Spartak had a strong penalty appeal turned down in an end to end finish. A superb save from a Big Chris freekick made a mockery of the keepers age and weight and this proved to be the final real chance.

The battling performance right to the end was pleasing but the match was really lost in the opening half. Spartak's good start to the season was hard earned and their relief for the final whistle was obvious. I believe that's a draw and a 2-1 win for each of us now proving that we are both well matched. So here's to next time...
