RETIREMENT
Jim Boring

I used to drive here and there in my car
but the transmission went and I can’t afford to fix it.
I used to ride my bike in the park under the palm trees
but the seat broke and I can’t afford another one.
I used to walk by the canal and feed the crows
but my sandals wore paper-thin and I can’t afford new ones.
I used to sit and think about these things until the woman next door
pierced her coccyx on the arm of a wooden chair.
I can’t afford to sit down.
