ALLIGATOR CHORUS

IN FOLKTALES
Corey Mesler

“It’s dark on purpose/so just listen.”
                    Lawrence Raab

    In folktales
    the hero loses something,
    a limb, an eye,
    his courage.
    And there’s always a woman,
    evil or only unlucky,
    whose life entwines with
    his and either
    chaos or contentment follows.
    The hero is always male.
    The woman is always female.
    In folktales
    there is much to ponder,
coming as they do from a past
    so long passed that
    truths cling to the tale
    like succubi.
