GSG FICTION CONTEST WINNERS:

CONGRATULATIONS to the winners of the Gator Springs Gazette fiction contest:

FIRST PRIZE of $300 goes to Rusty Barnes for his story, When Sylvester Dances.

SECOND PRIZE of $100 goes to Richard Madelin for his story, A Glass of Wine.

THIRD PRIZE of $75 goes to Kathy Fish for her short story, Moira.

Fandango Virtual sends thanks to all contest entrants and gives special thanks to the dauntless contest readers, Gazette staff members Bob Arter, Gabriel Orgrease and Jonathan Redhorse and to contest administrator, Maude Linley. Through their efforts, twelve stories were chosen in a blind reading. Our appreciation is extended to Tom Saunders for the difficult task of choosing the final winners from those twelve fine stories.

The three winning entries will be published in issue 2/2005 of Gator Springs Gazette: ARE WE THERE YET?

The other finalists (in alphabetical order) were Anne Marie Jackson, Wenonah Lyon, Lisa McMann, Richard Madelin, Pieter Mayer, Steve Newton, Susan O’Neill, Patricia Parkinson and Ann Walters (Sharon Hurlbut).

They will all be invited to have their stories published in future issues of the Gazette.

GSG ONLINE:

The online version of Gator Springs Gazette's PROMISES TO KEEP is now live, the last issue of volume 3. Hit your browser refresh button if it seems to be stuck.

In 2005 our numbering system will change: issues will not have a reference to month, but will be numbered 1 through 6 followed by the year. As with the current issue, the print version will be released first followed by the online version which will be released one month later.

ONLY 12 MORE DAYS TO ENTER THE FICTION CONTEST. (See details below)

CONTEST UPDATE:

We have adopted the following rules for future contests:

  • Never hold a contest during the same month as a major election.
  • Never hold a contest during NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month)

We have received numerous notes, among them:

“Sorry, I was going to enter, but I am too bummed out over the election results.”
“Hey, I might enter, but not until I’ve reached 50,000 words at NaNo.”
“I wanted to enter but my story is too long/too short.”
“Don’t I get something for subscribing through the payment plan?”

So, we have decided to flex the rules a bit by:

  • expanding the word count limits (now 500 – 8000 words)
  • extending the deadline (now midnight on 12 December 2004)
  • giving you more bang for your buck
($10 reading fee covers up to TWO (2) entries)

FULL SUBSCRIBERS may still enter as often as they like with no fee.
PAYMENT PLAN SUBSCRIBERS may submit ONE (1) entry with no fee.

1 November 2004

The second bi-monthly issue of Gator Springs Gazette has gone to press and subscription numbers are growing. We attribute this good fortune to a) the special subscriber bonus in the GSG Fiction Contest and b) the new payment plan option allowing subscribers to pay for each issue before it comes out, thus spreading the cost. With this option you simply stop paying when you no longer want to subscribe, though we believe once you have held an issue in your hands, it will be difficult to do so. You will find links to subscription information on the GSG home page.

Fiction contest entries are coming in, but we have good vibes about YOUR entry and wonder why it hasn't been received yet. The odds of your story winning the 1st prize money of $300 are far better than for you getting struck by lightning and undoubtedly better than having that same story accepted by the New Yorker.

SUBSCRIBER BONUS: Purchasers of prepaid annual subscriptions to GSG are entitled to enter the contest as often as they like with NO ENTRY FEE.

We have finally managed to organise a proper mailing list. If you have purchased any of Fandango's print magazines or have ever been published in any of our online venues, your name has probably been added to the list. If you haven't received something from us in the the last month, however, and want to keep informed about Fandango happenings, please use the form on the left to add your name to our list. Our lists will never be sold or used for any purpose other than keeping you informed of Fandango's publishing news and you may unsubscribe at any time.

The inaugural issue of the Bonfire quarterly literary journal will be released in January 2005. Subscription information will be available soon on Bonfire's home page. In the meantime, go have a peek at sensational cover art by Manohar M.R.

1 October 2004

Fandango Virtual is pleased to announce Gator Springs Gazette's second annual fiction contest, this time dedicated to short stories of 1000 to 5000 words in length. Entries will be accepted through November 30th and winners will be announced on New Year's Day. 1st prize is $300, with $100 and $75 going to 2nd and 3rd place winners respectively. The reading fee for each entry is $10, payable through PayPal (click on link below for details).

SUBSCRIBER BONUS: Purchasers of prepaid annual subscriptions to GSG are entitled to enter the contest as often as they like with NO ENTRY FEE.

GSG FICTION CONTEST DETAILS

1 September 2004

Another Milestone: Gator Springs Gazette goes bi-monthly with its September-October issue which has increased to 40 pages and contains over 22,000 words. We are finalizing negotiations with a new printer/distributor and are now able to offer a formal subscription plan for Gazette readers. Other plans in the works for GSG include an anthology and a short story contest. Watch this space for details.

Bonfire, while based in the UK, refuses to be defined as a British journal. Its inaugural issue (scheduled for release in January 2005) is developing a decidedly international flavor with a group of highly talented writers setting the standard for issues to come.
