If we count the weeks, days, hours and seconds of season 2002-2003, it would be a hell of a total. In football only one total counts, or does it? Is it the total points scored? Or the total goals scored? Or perhaps the total of goals scored against? What we had playing for us and supporting us was a group of people who ALL wanted Pools to get promoted. Here are a few of their views on our greatest season ever...

Ritchie Humphreys (Midfielder): My greatest moment of last season was obviously getting promotion, it was what we set out to do and something we are very proud of. I have never and may never again gain automatic promotion so it will always be something I will remember. After the way it ended in my first season with Pools with the penalty miss I coudn't wait to get going again and the support I recieved from the fans and the players was fantastic. I'm sure its been said before in the previous 2 seasons but our team spirit and our determination to work for each other is as good as I have experinced. My most enjoyable moment last season on a personal front was my first league hat-trick, but I have to say my best goal was my first against Southend at home. It was one of those strikes that you practice in training and they rarely come off, luckily for me that day it did. I think our best result was that against Boston away on a freezing cold day and a muddy pitch, we grinded out three points which again showed our togetherness and team spirit. Our bus trip round the town was brilliant and the atmosphere outside the civic centre was something I'll never forget. Finally I think Chris Turner, Colin West, Mike Newell and Kevin Sheedy deserve a special mention for their efforts into getting us promoted.

Chris Westwood (Defender): To finally get promoted after 3 seasons of dissapointment in the playoffs was the best feeling I've ever had so far in my football career and to finish in the highest position the club as ever finished is something in its self. Now we will always be part of this clubs history. Living in the town I know how the people feel and its been great to see a smile on people's faces at last knowing that we have finally done it. So keep smiling and cheering us on in DIVISION 2!!!

Jon Bass (Defender): Well I guess you don't want to hear about trips to Boston ressies on Wednesday nights in February but it does describe how things went for me on a personal level last season. Every player wants to play in the first team, it goes without saying, but unfortunately I managed only 5 appearances in a Poolie shirt. However, despite the disappointment of a lack of first team action, I cannot understate how happy I was, and still am, to be a part of the 2002/03 promotion squad. The bus tour at the end of the season was something very special, for if anything, it showed what fantastic support we've received over the year and just how much the football club means to the town's people. To be a part of that made me feel very proud and privelidged to wear the club's colours (even if it was for only a few occasions!?!)

Paul Arnison (Defender): At last, were finally up into Division Two, only the 2nd time in the clubs history!Playing in Division Two next season means a lot to me. Being from the town myself I can also appreciate how much it also means to the fans. Hopefully we are in for some exciting times. The club, fans and players all deserve to experience football at a higher level. Thankfully, with all the hardwork from the team, management and the dedicated support from the fans we have the opportunity to do just that... BRING IT ON!

Leanne Reid (Supporter): From the start of the season to the end Ive been on high. I couldnt wait for the season to start and travelled from Devon where I was on holiday all the way to Carlisle. All the way through the season I was hoping that we would be promoted and even felt sick at Scunthorpe when I new we could clinch promotion. The atmosphere of the season has been great and one that I will never forget.

Bernadette Malcolmson (Supporter): What an awesome season that was! This season has been one massive roller coaster ride with a LOT more highs than lows and one in which we never looked back right from the first game at Carlisle. The determination to win and the entertaining exciting football played this season has been sensational and something a lot of Poolies thought that we would never see the likes of at the Vic. The playoff heartaches seemed to have made the team this season even more hungry to clinch promotion this time around and WE DID IT. Thank you Hartlepool United for our best season yet, may there be many more to come. You are a wonderful squad and have made history here and made us ALL feel so Proud to be Poolies.

Julie Gibson (Deputy Sports Editor- Hartlepool Mail): I was delighted that one of my final jobs as Deputy Sports Editor of the Hartlepool Mail was to design the Hartlepool United promotion supplement. For the previous three seasons we had made contingency plans for a Pools special should they succeed in their dream, and each year those proposals had been shelved. It was an exciting time, watching them take command at the top of the table, before claiming their rightful place in the Nationwide Second Division. I am happy to have played a small part in ensuring the memories of the season will always be remembered.
