I have recently completed the CACHE level 2 course for teaching assistants and I found this booklet invaluable. Although short at 40 pages, it provides a concise guide both to the role of the teaching assistant and the main special needs that the TA will come across in their day to day work. It gives a range of strategies and adaptations for working with children who have special educational needs. One of the most useful parts for me was a section on matching abilities with activities. This section llinked a child's reading age with their ability to handle various textual resources. I found this of particular interest when planning work for small groups and individuals.

Steve Laws, worked in secondary education as Head of Humanities. He then worked as an I.T. coordinator for the Scunthorpe Special Needs Support Service before leaving to work for Desktop Publications.
