Story Title

map of my area

I was born Evie Mary WILSON on the 21 september 1941 in Holme Hale Norfolk England to James William CULLEN and Dorothy WEST

I have 1 brother Victor John Malcolm born 1943 and 1 half sister Barbara Violet born 1935

I was born in a small bungalow 3 Station Road the second child to my mother they were not wed. My childhood to the age of 7 years was spent mostly with my Godmother or my father, as my step father wanted a son. My godmother was the midwife who delivered and named me after a friend of hers. My mother wanted Mary to name me as I was the first baby that she delivered since becoming a midwife. The first year of my life I was with Mary and John Tripp. Every morning mummy got me out of bed and get me dressed she always put me in frilly dresses white socks and shoes. Mary would be there waiting for me. Mummy would give me my breakfast and then I would go off with Mary to her house where she would put me in clothes that I could play in and get dirty. My brother John was born 10th September 1943 my memories of this ah vague. My mothers 1st daughter Barbara was her husbands child.

Then I started to go all round Norfolk with my father. We went to Derham market every week I loved going there because we used to go to Gressenhall on the way and while my daddy was inside the house I was allowed to go and talk to all the people there and they used to take me to see the animals on the farm and sometimes they took me indoors and showed me the dinning room and things there. The children were always dirty and dressed the same in what to me looked like dirty scruffy clothes. He taught me about nature and how important plants, animals and all things were important and had there place. He showed me how to just sit and watch the small animals and let them come right up to you even to this day I can still have this inner stillness and just sit and watch lifes magic.

When I was about 7 my mother took us to London.Mummy woke me up early and got me dressed and said we were going on a venture Johnny was being dressed by the lady that stayed with us. Then mummy gave me a little case and said I had to carry it and I had my dolly in my arms she was always with me. We got on a big noisy machine and it took me to a nasty smelly noisy place mummy said it was London and we were going to live there. I dont like her anymore its dirty and smelly here not like were I came from.We lived in a hostel as we had no home. I used to go out a lot there and my mum always used to dress me smart, and I'd wander round London. One day I found a street market and followed the man with the cart because it was like the one my father used on market days it brought back memories. I thought it might take me back to him oh I so wanted to go home to where it was quiet and you could hear the birds sing and the animals going through the undergrowth. He led me to the back streets of the east end the slums in those days .

I got lost and was wandering around trying to find my way out when the urchins as they were called started to attack me for my clothes and call me snobby rich kid. Then one little girl came out of an alleyway and saw and rescued me I went with her to her house and her mam cleaned me up as best as she could and gave me a drink they were so kind to me and I told them about wanting to go home to my dad. Kissy showed me how to get out of the back streets and tryed to find my coat. When I got home my mum told me off because I was dirty and had lost my coat, I was sent to bed with no tea. I used to go and meet Kissy a lot after that and she taught me how to help her get fruit and bits from under the barrows and I wore her clothes so as not to ruin mine she showed me where the boats came in and we found ones that had Kings Lynn on them I knew that name as that was one of the places daddy used to take me. It made me want to ask them to find him but Kissy used to say they wouldnt be able to .One day I went to the boats on my own and found one that had Kings Lynne on the side so I crept on it and hid. One of the times I did this they didn't find me for a long time, but the police were looking for me and because I'd hidden on the boats before they looked on all the boats with Kings Lynne written on them. My mum and sister were very cross with me and I was kept in for a long time and only went out to school. One day Johnny & I went to see the changing of the guard at the Queens home and we watched all the guards marching and changing over we followed them back to there barracks and on the way we found the place where the Queen had her horses and men so we sneeked in to see the horses and the soldiers showed us around they were really kind and let me sit on one of the horses.

We lived there until we got a house in Carpenters Park Watford. We went all over the place in Watford and Carpenters Park and often used to play on the golf course there was a dell there (a big hollow area with trees round it) we made a rope swing by tying a piece of rope to a branch and hold on to it and swing out over the dell somtimes we let go and fell into the dell but it was fun and we had a camp there. We moved 2 or 3 times cos mummy was still running away and was scarred. Just before my 10th birthday mummy sent my sister away and then sent Johnny and me to a children's home in Waterlooville Portsmouth. I was there until I was 14

The story of my life is about my memories they came back jumbled so wrote them that way I found them the other day and decided to put them here for my children. I call it my story
