Note: This Orgaanisation is not 'official' and has not been sanctioned by the creators of New Moon. It is mere;y my views on the organisation of the Guid, based on my knowledge of the background and guild titles (if the creators would like to sanction it however, there wont be any objection from me)
The organisation of the Circle is fairly loose - people will
group together and operate with their friends, generally people
who joined the Circle at approximately the same time. They will
then generally rise through the ranks together, moving from
assignment to assignment as their seniority and responsibilities
within the Circle grows.
Generally speaking, the responsibilities of the rangers vary in
this order as they rise through the ranks.
Upkeep of the forest
Scouting
Hunting
Explorers and Messengers
Other Assignments
The Inner Circle
Within these functions, the rangers operate in small groups,
under the command of a Ranger Captain. Occasionally, if the task
to be done is particularly important, a higher ranked Ranger will
take command of the group.
Higher ranked Rangers may also get assigned to groups to advise
and add their knowledge and expertise to the task in hand. Most
often though, the higher ranks will be assigned to specific
missions by the Council of Rangers and the Guildmaster, usually
operating alone, but sometimes with other rangers.
Below are the descriptions of the various tasks undertaken by the
Rangers
Upkeep of the Forest.
Not everyone shows the forest the respect that it deserves.
People enter the forest and pollute it with their rubbish and
defile the natural plant life that can be found growing here. One
of the tasks of a ranger is to remove this rubbish and tend to
the trees and plants to ensure that they recover. This is usually
the first task given to a young ranger, for it is relatively
danger free, and gives them the chance to develop their knowledge
of plant life and herblore. However, even at this level there is
danger. Roving groups of kobolds, goblins and orcs can be found
in many places in the Silver Oak forest, and these young rangers
must always be wary of attack. They are also shown some of the
hidden pathways of the forest, so that they may retreat to safer
positions, and summon help against particularly strong foes.
Scouting
When a stranger enters the Silver Oak forest, the Circle is aware
of it almost immediately. This is due to the network of scouts
that roam the forest, always wary of people who may seek to harm
it. These wily men and women know all the arts of remaining
unseen in the forest, slinking through the underbrush and using
the hidden pathways to remain unseen as they keep a vigil on the
intruder. Often, a well-aimed arrow is enough to dissuade
strangers from encroaching upon, and harming the woodland, but
occasionally stronger help must be sought.
Hunters
When the scouts report back to Hawk's Vision with news of raiders
in the forest, the Hunters are mobilised to deal with the threat.
They are skilled in the arts of combat and creaturelore, able to
summon the largest forest creatures to fight by their side. They
strike from the shadows, swift and deadly, their animal charges
fighting boldly alongside them until the enemy is defeated.
Explorers and Messengers
There are parts of the Silver Oak forest that are unexplored and
undiscovered, even by the Circle of Rangers. However, this
undiscovered timberland is being lessened all the time through
the work of the Guild's Explorers. Experts in the arts of
survival, and trained by the finest teachers in the arts of
combat, these tough and hardy men and women are able to survive
for months in the deepest parts of the forest. They live off the
land, and are protected by animal companions discovered and tamed
along the way. Usually, all that is found is yet more forest, but
sometimes, they bring back news of an orc encampment, or a Wood
Elf village.
Recently, with the advent of the Tsanese junks, the Council has
shown an eagerness to send Explorers to the distant lands of Tsan.
Early missions brought back news of the Yakuza, and the fear that
they had instilled into the people of Tsan City. Since then, more
and more rangers have been sent over to the Dragonlands in an
attempt to prevent their corruption from spilling out into the
countryside to the east of the city.
The Silver Oak forest is a vast place, and the members of the
Circle of Rangers are often miles from each other. Often,
messages are sent via bird of prey, but sometimes, Runners are
used to deliver the messages and news to the Council at Hawk's
Vision and to other rangers operating in the forest and beyond.
They are experts at tracking, and have a high level of personal
fitness - able to maintain a swift run for several miles to
ensure speedy delivery of news throughout the forest.
Other Assignments
Many of the tasks demanded of the Circle do not fit into any of
the above categories. Sometimes, these tasks are safe and
straightforward, and can be carried out by any available member
of the Circle. At other times, however, these tasks may be risky
and require high levels of skill and experience. At times like
these, the Guild calls upon the higher ranked members of the
Circle, Striders and Guardians are just two of these groups. They
have been members of the Circle for many years, and have honed
their skills to a level of expertise that commands respect from
the lower levels of the Circle. One of the tasks that they are
often called upon to complete is the containment of the forest
goblins in their palisade. They patrol the perimeter of the
compound, slaying any goblins that dare to venture outside. Only
the most skilled Ranger Lords actually enter the palisade, sowing
confusion and death on the goblins within.
The Inner Circle
The Inner Circle is an elite group of Rangers charged with
protecting Hawk's Vision. Seniority within the ranks isn't
necessary to join the Inner Circle, but exceptional combat
ability, as well as an unswerving loyalty to the Guild is.
Members of the Inner Circle would gladly lay down their lives to
protect the Guild and its members, although this isn't usually
necessary, and normally it is the enemies of the Circle who lie
defeated
