EMMA COOMBER - PROOFREADER

What is proofreading?

Essentially proofreading is a final reading of a text to ensure no typographical errors remain. More generally I will also proofread your text for spelling and basic grammatical errors. Publishers often use proofreaders to check for printing errors before their books are published.

And copy editing?

I also offer a copy editing service, which is a more in-depth review of your document than proofreading alone. I will suggest changes which help to make the text clearer and more readable. This can be particularly helpful when you are writing a complex or scientific article or essay, as it can be hard to distance yourself from your work and see it from a layperson’s point of view.

Who needs a proofreader?

Proofreading is a skill required by students, businesses, publishers and anyone who needs to produce documents with a high standard of accuracy and clarity. Anyone who produces literature needs a proofreader.

Can’t my computer check for spelling errors?

In a word, no! Computers are useful, but they can’t read your work for context or meaning, as a proofreader can. For example, most spelling and grammar check programs would have no problem with the following text: “If your going to fast passed a policemen, you mite get a tick it”. A proofreader could help you spot those mistakes and typographical errors.
