The female is at the top of the image with the male below. The male is blacker with less spotting and a broader head.

Note the slight scarring on the neck of the female and missing tail tip - both mating injuries. However, outside the mating season the female is by far the more dominant of the two animals and will chase the male away from food and the best basking site as the mood takes her!
