BAPE ( Bathing Ape ) are to show photographer Shawn Moretensen's photo's in their gallery to promote his book.
Among Shawn's photo's, which include Shaun Ryder and Beck, will be one of Ian Brown, taken shortly after he left prison in 1998.

Elephant Stoned has got it's grubby paws on one. Picture as soon as it arrives.

Johnny's on the road again...

Reports are starting to filter back from John Squire's latest leg of his tour.
So far, John has been playing a host of Roses tunes in his set, alongside material from his album Time Changes Everything.
A setlist and a rather nice story from backstage in Dublin can be read over at This Is The Daybreak's discussion forum
from the Daybreak man himself, Paul McAuley.

Johnny Squire sets the record straight?

John Squire was interviewed this week ( 15th Jan ) by a student rag at Dublin College.
In it, John speaks in detail for the first time about the Roses in 95 and how their split came to be. Not surprisingly, John's side of things differs to Ian's.

Looks like the only way we'll ever find out the truth is if Reni decides to tell us..

Read the full interview here, at Hobbit's Forum. Pieced together from posts on other boards.

Ian Brown and Harry Potter?

Current rumours say that Ian has been confirmed a part in the new Harry potter film, 'Harry Potter & The Prisoner Of Azkaban' .
Though the NME were told that he wasn't, they went ahead and published that he was anyway..

Brightest Buttons XFM decided to clear things up and went straight to Steve Lowes, and printed the truth.

“That’s quite possibly the funniest rumour I’ve ever heard, I don’t know how these stories come together.
The singer was apparently spotted at a meal with a group of friends who included the film’s director “And someone puts two and two together and thinks that he’s gonna be in the movie. I can categorically state that there is absolutely no truth whatsoever in the story that he’s confirmed for a part in Harry Potter 3”.

Ian Brown Goes Manic.

Sunday Dec 1st saw the opening night of The Manic Street Preachers UK and Ireland tour.
As suspected, Ian has taken a lot of flack from the Manics fans for his live performances, most saying his voice is terrible, his attitude stinks etc.
A source close to the band, said the whole band are enjoying the arena experience, and have had many positive vibes from the Manics fans.

Sunday night was dogged by bad luck though as, due to bad weather at Dublin airport, Inder Goldfinger's plane was turned back from Leeds only 15 minutes into the flight.
A tabla replacement was quickly found for Inder, though Aziz says Inder was sorely missed.

The Manics fans are at a loss as to why Ian was chosen as support.
Maybe they don't know that one Xmas night in 95 saw The Stone Roses supported by The Manics at Wembley.

A returned favour?

Catch The Manic Street Preachers on tour through December.

Aziz - New Dates and New Material?

Elephant Stoned heard from Aziz Ibrahim this week, from Denmark where he was recording some new material.
Aziz has some new dates up at his website for 2003.

Next up on the Big 4-0 Train..

Happy Birthday John Squire..40 today. ( 24th November ). All the best Johnny..!

John Squire Article In The Daily Star.

Obviously written either a while ago, or by a dozy 'researcher'. The bones of it is a quote from John which says :

There are a few songs I would Like to play and I have thought about it a lot. I Don't listen to the Roses records and I haven't decided which ones I will do yet. But I wrote most of Second Coming and I think I did all of Waterfall, so that one would be a good one to do. I really like the riff in Driving South too, so I could do a rootsy version of that.

Maybe this could mean John may play this on his tour next year..? Fingers crossed.

Happy Birthday Mani..

The first of the four Roses to make it to 40. All the best from Elephant Stoned, Mani!

The Squire Man Returneth..

Johnny Squire played three warm up dates this week, ahead of his national tour early next year.
All three dates quickly sold out.

John has done the much anticipated, and included Stone Roses tunes in his set, alongside tracks from his new album Time Changes Everything. Notable exclusions are anything by The Seahorses. A report from Mark Strange ( StringThing ) tells of a relaxed, happy Squire, playing with a good solid band.
Highlights for most seemd to be the OPENING track which was I Am The Resurrection!

Setlist :

I Am The Resurrection (coda)
I Miss You
Shine A Little Light
Transatlantic Near Death Experience
All I Really Want
She Bangs The Drums
Joe Louis
15 Days
Waterfall
Strange Feeling
Welcome To The Valley
Time Changes Everything

Ian Brown Vs The Stone Roses

Both Ian Brown's new album Remix Of The Spheres and The Stone Roses compilation album The Very Best Of The Stone Roses entered the charts this week.
Ian's album entered at number 43, while The Very Best Of made it to number 19.

Ian Brown Announces Warm Up Gig.

Ian Brown will play Jersey's Gloucester Hall Saturday 23rd November 2002, as a warm up for his tour dates with The Manic Street Preachers in December. Details for the gig and the Manics dates are at Ian Brown's Official Website

Meanwhile, The Ian Brown Remix of Let Robeson Sing by The Manic Street Preachers is included on CD2 of the limited edition 'Forever Delayed - The Manic Street Preachers Greatest Hits' released Oct 28th.

Ian And Mani Record Together Again.

As hinted at some time ago by Elephant Stoned, Mani has collaborated with Ian Brown on a track for the New U.N.K.L.E. album currently being recorded.
Reports are that 'we shouldn't read too much into that, re the reformation rumours'.

Meanwhile, UNKLE have given their Golden Touch remix skills to FEAR for the new Ian Brown Remix album, Remix Of The Spheres, due out November 4th, on the same day as The Very Best Of The Stone Roses.
The FEAR remix (Unklesounds Gu Fear-Edit, Pt. 1) is included on Global Underground's Global Underground 23: James Lavelle In Barcelona

Joe Louis Just Misses Top 40.

The first single from John Squire's Time Changes Everything, Joe Louis, has just missed the Top 40 by entering at No.43.

Elephant Stoned receives acknowledgement for
forthcoming Stone Roses Best Of.

The Very Best Of The Stone Roses, the compilation album released on November 4th has reached Elephant Stoned for review.
The album has excellent new liner notes, by John McCready, along with The Stone Roses artwork, and pictures of various concert tickets/flyers and setlists, and is nicely presented.
All tracks have been re-mastered by Chris Blair, some overseen by John Leckie, and some by Simon Dawson.
The tracks have noticeable improvements..More crisper and punchier. More so on TSR era tracks than Second Coming.
John McCready was behind the Mojo article earlier this year, and he explains that the rest of the booklet after his foreward is taken up by the re-edited bits of the Mojo article. Much of which didn't make it to print.

Ian : ( On IATR coda )
It was me that coaxed them to do that ending on Resurrection. For two days I watched them work out the ending of that song. It was just fantastic, and it still sounds amazing. To me, Mani and Reni were the best rhythm section to come out of the UK, and John's the best guitarist. I got to hear them rehearsing all the time. I know they're my mates and I'm biased but they were just fuid.Totally fluid.

John :
We were maing the kind of music that we wanted to listen to, and it stood up against the music that we loved.

Reni :
They were all charming people with the correct qualities of anal retention, and even genius.

Mani:
Just to be playing with those guys, that was enough for me. Who wants a fucking kob? I'd rather be with Ian, John and Reni playing in a room and living on a fucking bag of peanuts. Just for the joy of what we could create.

A nice touch is an ackowledgement to this website and merseyparadise.net in the credits at the end of the booklet.

Anything Squire can do....Ian can do better..?

In what seems to be a direct response to John's rendition of Waterfall on XFM's Live Session, Ian Brown and his band played the exact same track at his gig at Belfast's Ulster Hall on Sunday night ( 20th Oct )..!

Big thanks to Rabbit Fascist for this review, and the full story.

Ian Brown - Live Review - Ulster Hall, Belfast 20th October 2002.

In the midst of a storm drenched Belfast, one particular 'star' offered some light to the city's dreary skies. Ian Brown took to the Ulster stage to an ecstatic audience as Hundreds of adoring fans chanted as though he were their footballing legend. Chants of 'Iano, Iano' rang around the old building. Anticipation was at a high, and no one was let down!
The presence the former Stone Roses front-man brings to the stage is an experience in itself. From moment he parades himself to the mic, dancing and positioning himself in front of the crowd - in the most eccentric Parker jacket I've encountered in a while!
All the favourites were there: 'Bubbles', 'Set My Baby Free', 'Corpses In Their Mouths', 'Dolphins Were Monkeys', 'FEAR', 'Whispers', 'So many Soldiers'(after which he expressed his somewhat controversial desire to see 'the British soldiers fucking off home'. This seemed to take some by surprise, but Ian Brown doesn't surprise me.
Non-plussed, he continues, delivering a stonking version of 'Love Like a Fountain', slipping in an unusually extended teasing loop of 'Fools Gold.' This is a common occurance in a Brown show - the little sampled riff. This time, he overdone the teasing - they actually played the first verse and the chorus. Needless to say, the audience made up of Ian Brown/Roses fans went crazy. Everyone jumping around, to the solid funk of the Roses greatest moment. Suddenly, it stopped. The crowd booed lightheartedly, letting Ian know that they wanted to hear the whole track.

Ian smiled and recounted the fact that he'd met a fan backstage who'd told him she heard about the recent reformation rumours surrounding the Stone Roses. She'd told him not to do it. Ian agreed. He faced the crowd and said
'The Stone Roses are dead, yeah?', almost as though he were asking them for their approval. Its got to be said, the majority seemed to agree with him.
He then approached Aziz, had a quiet word in his ear, and the band unexpectedly launched into one of the most cherished Roses tunes, 'Waterfall'!
The master of surprise! One minute he was delcaring their death, the next he was singing the beautiful opening verse of one of their best loved tracks!
The Ulster Hall became instant bedlam. People screamed, jumped, hugged, others just stood with silly inane grins (me included), as Brown delivered the 89 classic with a stunning vocal performance. Although, as with Fools Gold, he stopped the track midway through - again the crowd got a bit peeved, but were happy enough to have heard any of it at all. It was a privelage. A real one off, unexpected treat. Worth the trip up north alone.
Ian - carrying a cold (he'd earlier told us he had considered pulling out of the show - thankfully he didn't!), ended his set with a spiralling sonic version of 'My Star'. No encore - but an amazing show. Ian and the band lapped up the applause and

King Monkey even had a little dabble with the mixing decks on the side of the stage. We wondered what tunes he was going to mix - he hit us with Fools Gold 9:53.

Fantastic Expectations, Amazing Revelations.
10/10

Elephant Stoned Reaches 100,000..!

Thanks for the hits folks, and I hope you'll continue to visit Elephant Stoned for all the latest info and gossip.

John Squire plays The Stone Roses

In a live session on London's XFM Radio, Johnny Squire played tracks from his album, then surprised listeners by treating them to one of his older songs..Waterfall.
Aside from Ian Brown playing Sally Cinnamon to an ecstatic Japanese crowd at Tokyo's Ebisu Garden Hall in 1999 ( and the occasional snippet of Fools Gold of late ), this is the first time any of the four Roses have played their material to an audience.
It now seems a safe bet that John will play some Stone Roses material on his forthcoming tour. ( Details at The Official John Squire Website )

There have been mixed reactions to the track, but you can make your own mind up at XFM's Website, where you can listen to streaming tracks from the session.

Squire Fuels Reformation Rumours.

In an interview with Pete Mitchell ( Virgin Radio ) Johnny has added fuel to the fire that is the Roses Reformation Rumour.

John is quoted to have said :

JS: It would a be a tremendous emotional high. We'd need mountains of Kleenex.

Q: (On not having spoke with Ian for seven years) Is that the obstacle that needs dealing with obviously? Ha ha. You can't obviously work together if you've not spoken in seven years?

JS: No. Well. I don't know. There could be a way. Semaphore maybe?!

More can be read here.
Big thanks to The Squire Site, Unanimous and IAWS .

John Squire releases Time Changes Everything ( Will They Won't They Part 3,784...)

Today ( Sept 16th ) sees the long awaited release of John Squire's debut solo album, Time Changes Everything..
Reviews on the whole are good, most comparing Johnny's voice to Dylan, and the laid back album has surprised most with it's apparent lack of 'guitar hero' licks.
John, being questioned on the possible reformation of The Stone Roses, siad he'd " rather remove his liver with a teaspoon.."

The Guardian Interview
The Guardian Review

However, in more recent interviews, John seems to be playing to the idea of a reconciliation at least.
On Channel 4's Teletext, John said :

"I don't want to do a reunion tour, because that would be putting matters to rest in the wrong way, if we were to reform, it would have to be to make a new album, and do a proper tour with new songs. I believe that will happen one day."

New album hype? Possibly..All good fun anyhow.

XFM announces their 2nd Remix album.

James Lavelle's ( U.N.K.L.E ) remix of Ian Brown's Dolphins Were Monkeys will be included on XFM's Remix follow up album, Remix 2.

Ian Brown Wins Muso Award

Ian was nominated and won Best Single award for Fear at The Muso's Awards in London.
Mani was the DJ for the night, and reports are that he and Peter 'Hooky' Hook of New Order repeatedly invaded the stage entertaining the crowd with their antics..!

Hooky won the award for best bassist.

Biggest embarrassment was 'funny' man Johnny Vegas, and his multiple vomiting..Vegas was heard to be having a dig at our Ian.
Seems he and monkeys don't get on...

For more pictures, see the Muso Website.

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow ( groan )

Hardly news, but International Man Of Mullet -Ian Brown, appeared on stage at the Haldern festival recently, sporting a Fedora hat and a freshly shaved bonce.

Other acts at the show were Haven, Shed 7, Joe Strummer And The Mescaleros, and the headline act was Paul Weller.

Click here for a sneak peek at a couple of pictures from a collection that will be online at Elephant Stoned soon.

Ian Brown Up For Grabs.

From Sightsavers :

A unique opportunity to see cool man of rock Ian Brown play live at this summer’s V2002 festival, hang out with him in the VIP bar and walk away with a fabulous memento; your very own one-off Ian Brown hand print in glazed ceramic, complete with his signature and photograph.

Commenting on his support of Sight Savers, Ian says:

"It is possible for the rock 'n' roll circus that feeds the fat cats to also benefit those in real need. Last year I charged journalists £15 a question for Sight Savers; the cost of a cataract operation and an insanely small amount of money to give someone back the gift of sight.

"This auction will allow the charity to help many more people. I'm also looking forward to making my hand print; I've got one of George Best's foot which I love."

John Squire Returns?

According to NME.com, John Squire has finished his solo album, and it putting the finishing touches to it in the studio.
It is due to be released late summer...

What NME don't tell you is that though it has been widely rumoured for months, The Stone Roses internet community knew about this for definate 14 days ago, thanks to Paul McAuley of This Is The Daybreak, confirmed by Simon Dawson in the forthcoming online interview at Paul's site.

More proof the NME gets it's news from the fans on the net.

We know you're watching us boyz...Did you know Reni's drumming on the Sugababes album?

In other reliable reports, we hear Johnny is singing, and that his album has a very 'rocky' feel to it.
Dotmusic hint that John may sign to the Big brother record label, and a current runour is that Liam Gallagher contributes to two tracks on the album.
