Alan Knowles BSc
Fencing Instructor

I started fencing in 1981 at the age of 10 and have been taught by Steve Glaister, Les Jones and Herman du Preez. I currently fence epee and still compete in this weapon when the opportunity allows me. In my youth I fenced foil and sabre and competed in these as well. This depth of competitive fencing has allowed considerable insight in to fencing and how to teach the art. The Art and Science of Fencing is still as entertaining now as it was when I was young, there is always something new to learn.

I have been teaching fencing since 1988 as a amateur and in 2003 I became professional. Since becoming professional I have gained regional coaching qualifications in foil, epee and sabre (this is Level 4 in the new English fencing stardards, 5 being the top).

Between 1989 and 1996 I held the posts of Chairman, Coach and Team Captain at Bradford University Fencing Club.

I have represented the North-West Region and the Southern Region at the Winton cup and represented Wiltshire for foil and epee. .
