Older Montages

 

The scans in this section are taken from a selection of paper "cut and paste" photomontages that I made in the 1980s. The politics of the anti-nuclear movement tend to dominate them. I was an active supporter, and also much inspired by the montage work of Peter Kennard, and going much further back, the political activism of the original anti-Nazi "photomonteur" John Heartfield. These two and several other artists who have used this medium are featured in my other site at www.cutandpaste.info

At that time the Sunday supplements, which provided most of the raw material, covered much more hard news and less lifestyle froth than they do today. For that I had to turn to women's magazines for the series that covers issues of sexual politics. I hope that some of these images, which were exhibited in several places at the time and have not seen the light of day since, are still of more than historical interest.
