The Captain's Dilemma

by David Gray

I wrote to a woman I never knew,
I told her about her son.
I tried to be kind and soften the blow
and spoke of the victories we'd won.
I said he was brave and a credit to all
and he died in the way he had hoped.
A bright honest boy full of courage and joy
and the times when we laughed and we joked.
And when it was done and I read it out loud
I'd missed all the things that were real.
All the panic and fear and the cries that we hear
and the waiting for days for a meal.
It was then that I knew I was wasting my time
and another could send her the pain.
Your boy's on the wire,
under enemy fire,
you won't ever see him again.
