Setting up Ed FM

Initial setup

Before Ed FM can be used, the Setup application has to be run at least once for the paths to be generated correctly. Run setup by selecting the shortcut to "setup.exe" you made before.

The first thing you should see is a small welcome dialogue, telling you that as this is the first time Ed FM has been run on this machine, the paths generated by Ed FM must be correct. When you press OK, you will be taken straight to the System setup screen. The first three paths are the ones you need to check, without these Ed FM will not run properly at all.

If you installed Ed FM to C:\Program Files\EdFM\ then the paths should look like this:

Executables: C:\PROGRA~1\EDFM\BIN
Data files: C:\PROGRA~1\EDFM\DATA
Log files: C:\PROGRA~1\EDFM\LOGS

If these paths are incoorect, then you must change them to point to the correct directories.

You'll probably notice at this point that Ed FM uses "old" (8.3) style filenames, hence your "Program Files" has become "PROGRA~1". This is correct - if you enter "new" style filenames, Ed FM will not work.

System setup

Paths

These must be correct for Ed FM to function properly.

Executables: The directory in which all Ed FM's ".exe" files reside.
Data files: The directory in which all Ed FM's database files reside.
Log files: The directory in which all Ed FM's log files reside.
Default audio path: When browsing for the wave file of a new record, this is the directory in which browsing will commence. You are not committed to choosing a recording from this directory.

General

Station name: This will appear in the title bar of Ed FM.
Audio editor: Your preferred audio editor. Ed FM will run this program on request when in the database manager.
Reload safety margin: This value, in seconds, is the maximum time it takes to reload a player. This information is needed when Ed FM is detecting overlap situations. If you find segues aren't working properly, try increasing this value. Usually a value between 0.5 and 1 second is sufficient.

Volume settings

Sound card 1/2: The level at which each sound card should be initialised to when Ed FM is started up. If your audio sounds distorted, try reducing these values. If you are using one sound card, only the first scroll-bar has an effect.
For sweepers reduce to: When a sweeper or a link is played over the introduction of a record, the record's volume will be reduced to this value. Pressing the "Test" button will reduce the second sound card to the selected percentage of the level set in the previous scrollbar. This feature is not relevant if you only have one sound card.

Preferences

Gauge colours

When a recording is being played in a player, a gauge indicates the progress through the recording. This gauge changes colour depending on the state of the recording.

Introduction: The colour the gauge will be during the introduction of the recording.
End of intro: The colour the gauge will be during the last second of the introduction.
Normal: The colour the gauge will be during the normal part of the recording.
End warning: The colour the gauge will be 5 seconds before the end of the recording.
Dead: The colour the gauge will be after the recordings "Start Next" point has been reached..
Volume indicator: The colour of the vertical gauges used to incidate the volume of each player.

Default player options

These settings allow you to specify the state of some of the Playout application's options at startup.

Allow replays: Whether, during playout, the "Play" control should re-start the track or perform no function.
Fade on segues: Whether Ed FM should fade out the first recording as it starts the next when performing a segue. This must be switched off for setups with one sound card.
Fade time: How long the first recording takes place if "Fade on segues" is selected. This option is not relevant for setups with one sound card.
Fade on switches: Whether Ed FM should fade out the first recording as it starts the next when performing a switch. This must be switched off for setups with one sound card.
Fade time: How long the first recording takes place if "Fade on switches" is selected. This option is not relevant for setups with one sound card.

Database browser options

Font: This feature is not implemented.
Show second field when displaying: For the types that are selected here, both the "Title" and "Artiste/Comment" will be displayed. For the types that aren't selected, just the "Title" field will be displayed.

Logging settings

This controls what will be logged to output files. Remember that logging consumes processor time and disk space, so what you don't need to be logged, you might as well switch off. You can view the appopriate log by pressing the "View" button (this will load the log file into Windows Notepad), and you can delete the log file by pressing the "Delete" button.

Playout logs

These checkboxes allow you to select whether a log is generated every time a recording of the selected types is played.

System logs

These checkboxes allow you to control which types of system events are logged. Note that the "Logons / Logoffs" and the "All operations" features are not implemented.,
