Installing Ed FM

Introduction

I'm afraid there's no fancy automatic installation procedure (well, what do you expect for free!?), however Ed FM is not difficult to set up, so don't let that put you off. There's also no de-installation program, but again, if, for some obscure reason, you want to totally remove Ed FM, it's not hard to do.

Creating a directory for Ed FM

The first thing you need to do is create a directory for Ed FM to reside in. We reccomend something along the lines of

C:\Program Files\EdFM\

If you usually install programs to a different drive, replace the C:\ with the appropriate drive letter.

Installing the software files

Copy the Ed FM ".zip" file into the directory you've just created, and un-zip it. It should create the following directory structure:

C:\Program Files\EdFM\bin\
C:\Program Files\EdFM\data\
C:\Program Files\EdFM\logs\

Of course, if the directory you created for Ed FM isn't the same as in the previous example, the C:\Program Files\EdFM\ part of the paths will be different.

Creating shortcuts

You can just browse to the "\bin" Ed FM sub-directory and double-click on the ".exe" files to start the different components of Ed FM, however it's not very elegant, so we reccomend creating shortcuts.

In Windows 95 this is done in the following way:

  1. Right-click on the "Start" button on the taskbar. Select "Explore"
  2. Double-click the "Programs" folder.
  3. Right-click on a blank bit of the right-hand explorer pane (i.e. not on another file) and select "New...", then "Folder"
  4. A new folder will be created, and Explorer will immediately allow to you rename it from the rather un-imaginitive default name "New Folder". Type "Ed FM" and press return.
  5. Double-click on the newly created folder.
  6. Right-click in the right-hand explorer pane and select "New..." then "Shortcut"
  7. Push the "Browse" button, and browse to the Ed FM "bin\" directory.
  8. Select one of the three ".exe" files and press "OK".
  9. Press "Next >", then "Finish".
  10. Repeat steps 6 through 9 until shortcuts have been created for all three of the Ed FM executables.
You should now find that there is an "Ed FM" sub-folder in your "Programs" menu. You can just click on one of the newly created shortcuts to run the different parts of Ed FM.

Installing the DLLs

If you get a missing DLL error when you start Ed FM, you will need to install a couple of other files too. Download the DLLs ".zip" file, and extract the files contained within to

C:\Program Files\EdFM\bin\

If your path is different, extract the files to the BIN\ directory (it's the directory all the ".exe" files are in).
