Arthurlie Football Club

Arthurlie turned on the style at Fir Park as they lifted the OVD Scottish junior cup for only the second time in their history. The match was billed as the match between the "old firm" of the junior game, and there is no love lost between the two clubs. The match was surprisingly one-sided and Arthurlie dominated from the start on a glorious sunny day in May. The first goal was scored by defender Mark McLaughlin on 7 minutes when he hit a 20 yard left foot volley past Pollok keeper Ronnie Lowrie. Both sides then had chances before Man of the match John Millar made it 2-0 with a goal fit to grace any final at any level. Millar met a cross field pass on the edge of the box and volleyed it over the keeper and high into the net. The game then slipped further away from the Lok when defender David Elliot was red carded on 37 minutes for applauding the referee who had just booked him. The second half was more of the same and Steven Convery sent the Lie fans wild when he collected a Millar pass and ran through to drill a shot past Lowrie, 59 minutes and the cup was heading for Barrhead. Manager Jim McQuade then made a couple of substitutions, bringing on keeper Sandy McLean and Steve 'storno' Nugent. It was fitting that storno, Arthurlies longest servant at 12 years, should score the fourth. Again Millar provided the pass and storno drilled a half volley into the net from 18 yards, this was the cherry on top. Half of Barrhead were at Fir Park to see Davie 'digger' Fulton go up to lift the big cup, and the other half watched it live on TV. Guess were I was?
