Arthurlie defeated another of the Scottish
Cup semi finalists when they went to the home of rivals Pollok and triumphed
by the odd goal in three and in doing so progressed into the third round
of the Central league Cup.
First chance fell to Arthurlie when Craig Malcolm challenged Kris Robertson
in the six-yard box and the ball fell to Alan McFadden but he blasted
his shot over the bar. A whirlwind start then saw Eddie Annand collect
the ball 18 yards out but with the keeper exposed the striker sliced
his side foot shot wide of the target. Pollok responded with a header
from Davie Turnbull that James Evans turned round the post and a Zander
Ryan shot that just missed the target. A sustained spell of Pollok pressure
followed with a series of corners ending with Derek Heaton hitting the
‘lie crossbar with a header but the defence held firm.
The second half was only five minutes old when Arthurlie took a vital
lead, Brian Wardle won the ball at the edge of the box and he poked
the ball through to Craig Malcolm who squared for Eddie Annand
to slide in and fire a super shot into the top corner. The home side
almost hit back immediately when Zander Ryan got on the end of Brian
MacKay’s cross but his header slid just wide. MacKay then went
down in the box under a challenge from Gallacher but the referee booked
the winger for simulation. Pollok continued to press and some sparkling
build up play, especially down the right, created some good chances
but they just couldn’t find a way past Evans. Pollok brought on
Robert Downs and Alan Waddell and the strikers went close when Waddell’s
turn and shot was beaten away by Evans only to fall to his strike partner
but he fired wide. After soaking up so much pressure it was Arthurlie
who struck again in the 72nd minute when Lee Sharp
fired in a wicked corner that deceived Pollok keeper Kris Robertson
and despite the efforts of Derek Heaton at the back post the ball flew
straight into the net. Pollok were thrown a lifeline just 5 minutes
later when Sean Winter was adjudged to have brought down McKeown in
the box but Zander Ryan smacked the crossbar with the spot kick.
Winter had a chance to wrap things up
when John Johnston set him up but he screwed his shot wide of the target
as Robertson narrowed the angles. A slack defensive clearance then allowed
Alan Waddell a shot at goal but James Evans made a fine save with his
feet and the striker headed the rebound over. The referee somehow came
up with 6 minutes injury time and in the last of those he awarded lok
another penalty kick, this time Stephen Gallacher was penalized fro
a trip in the box, it looked like the defender had got a touch on the
ball first but Robert Downs slammed home the kick to
make the final score 2-1.
