Arthurlie crashed out of the Scottish cup at East Premier League side Glenrothes after a desperate performance. A scrappy opening saw Glenrothes looking the more dangerous side but neither keeper saw any real action until the game burst into life in the 30th minute. John Johnston collected a pass inside the home box and was chopped down, the referee waved away the penalty claims and Glenrothes raced up the park to open the scoring. A dodgy looking 'lie backline failed to deal with Benny Andrew's through ball and Graham Nicol slotted home a fine finish. Arthurlie were offering very little in attack but they did manage to get the ball in the net just before the break when Martin Hughes nodded home but the goal was rightly chopped at the Arthurlie midfielder had been holding his marker. Arthurlie fell further behind in the 60th minute when James Evans failed to get enough on a punched clearance and Glenrothes quickly played the ball down the right wing to MacBride and his cross was expertly clipped home by Benny Andrew. With their Scottish cup hopes now hanging by a thread Arthurlie tried desperately to get back into the game but spurned a wonderful chance in the 70th minute when Lee Sharp set up John Johnston but the midfielder sent his effort wide. Gary Faulds tried one last throw of the dice with Brian Wardle sent on as a makeshift striker but the extra space at the back meant the hosts were always dangerous on the break. With just 11 minutes remaining Glenrothes put the tie beyond Arthurlie when Graham Nicol raced in on goal and as Stephen Gallacher got level on the edge of the box the striker went to ground and he couldn't believe his luck when the referee pointed to the spot and to rub salt into the wounds he sent off Gallacher for a last man challenge, Benny Andrew blocked out any protests to slot home the spot kick. Good luck to Glenrothes in the 3rd round Arthurlie Evans, Winter, Sharp, Baxter, McKeown (Wardle) , Gallacher, Aitken (Smith), Hughes (Malcolm), Bradford, Johnston, McFadden. Not Used Ballantyne, Innes |
