Pollok
1 Arthurlie 2 Super League Premier Division Saturday 19th Aug 2006 |

These two sides served up a derby classic and when the final whistle sounded it was Arthurlie who were celebrating thanks to a late Joe Andrew goal that capped an amazing win. Pollok threatened early on but James Evans made a fine save from Alan Waddell's volley. Waddell was then involved in the games first controversial moment when he went down under a challenge from Roland Fabiani on 23 minutes, the referee pointed to the spot and up stepped Andy Essler but his kick was brilliantly parried by Evans and Essler then headed the rebound wide with goal gaping. Arthurlie lost Barry Nicholls and Martin Hughes to injury but it was one of the replacements who scored the opening goal. with just 2 minutes of the half remaining Joe Andrew found space down the left and his pin point cross took Kris Robertson out of the equation and Ross Ballantyne arrived at the back post to smash home an acrobatic volley for a quite stunning goal. Pollok came out strongly after the break and deservedly equalized when a hesitant 'lie defence allowed Bryan Dingwall time and space on he edge of the box and the striker fired home an unstoppable half volley. Buoyed by the goal the home side powered on and looked likely to score again but some tremendous defending from Fabiani, Shields and Wardle kept them at bay. Rab Sneddon introduced Robert Downs and he won Pollok their second penalty on 65 minutes when he was bundled to the ground by a desperate Fabiani challenge but Downs did himself no favors by pleading with the referee to get Fabiani sent off. Brian Dingwall stepped up but his kick was poor and James Evans dived low to his left and this game had taken another twist. It got harder for Arthurlie with 18 minutes to go when Alan Shields picked up his second booking for a tug on Robert Downs and it was really backs to the wall defending for the remainder of the game. Evans did well to command his area under a constant barrage of Pollok attacks but he was rarely called into any serious action and with just 4 minutes remaining Arthurlie produced a real sting in the tail as Joe Andrew broke up field and jinked past a couple of defenders before expertly slotting past Kris Robertson.
