Pollok should have levelled when ex 'lie midfielder Bryan Smith did well on the right wing and his pinpoint cross found McKeever in acres of space 8 yards out but he blasted the ball over the bar. Minutes later Friels was released on left and he flashed a shot that looked goalbound but Robertson produced a fine save with McShane clearing the loose ball. A second goal would have been tough on Pollok but John Jack came close when his header forced Wilson to claw the ball away for a corner that came to nothing. And so we reached the break with Arthurlie just about deserving the one goal lead.
Pollok came out strong in the second half and took the game to Arthurlie and they deservedly equalised in the 60th minute when a long ball led to hesitation the 'lie backline, this was fatal with a predator like Gavin Friels in the vicinity and the striker sent a lob from 17 yards over Robertson to send the visiting fans wild. Bouyed by the goal, Pollok got stronger and looked certain to score again but a mixture of wasteful finishing and desperate defending kept the scores level. With 10 minutes remaining the tie took another twist when Pollok's Atchison picked up his second yellow card for a foul on Charlie Hobbs on the edge of the box and this allowed Arthurlie to get back into the game. Last chance fell to Marc McShane who saw his long range shot take a deflection that sent it a yard past Wilson's goal.
The tie went straight to penalties and Bonnar McKenzie got Arthurlie off to the perfect start with a well placed kick. Simon Black then stepped up but sent a woeful kick past the right hand post. Mark Travers was up next and despite Wilson going the right way, he doubled Arthurlie's advantage. Haggarty just had to score Pollok's second and he kept his nerve to slot home. Brian McKeown turned up the pressure when he slotted his pen away and when Kris Robertson saved Stewarts effort it was up to Stevie Jack to finish things off but Wilson made a great stop to keep his side alive. Spot kicks always produce a hero and a villain, Kris Robertson and Gavin Friels stepped into these roles when the big keeper saved low to his right to send the home fans crazy. |
