Arthurlie
crashed to a defeat courtesy of a 90th minute penalty converted by George
Wallace. This match, however, will be etched in the memories of those
present due to the decisions made by the match officials throughout
the game. Two players hospitalised, four plus a coach sent off, a contentious
penalty and a goal chalked off into stoppage time and a fight that could
rival a boxing card. The upshot of the game (and I have to be careful what is said here) is that we should have buried Talbot long before the final minutes. The match started positively with the standout move seeing Rae feed McGarvey who spread the ball wide to Downs on the right before the cross was cleared for a corner. Stevie Jack and Colin Robertson both entered the referee’s book while Rae somehow escaped despite coming in high with his tackle. Rae and his counterpart (sorry name eludes me) then departed the field after a head knock which delayed the game by 15minutes, both players needing the services of the ambulance. Downs floated a shot from the right wing which narrowly beat the post while McGarvey saw a number of chances fall his way, each being spurned before the whistle blew to end the half. The second half started with Marc McShane becoming the first to see red, for an alleged stamping offence in the penalty box, though curiously we were awarded the free kick. Two minutes later and Stuart Davidson of Talbot followed him to the pavilion after protesting his booking for an innocuous challenge on Jack, a second booking followed immediately and he departed from the game. Garv missed another chance which sailed high over the bar and Robert Downs had two chances from the right side, both failing to test Talbot captain McIntosh in the goals. Neal Gilmour saw his toe-poke from six yards fly over the bar as Hobbs replaced Robertson in the ‘Lie line-up. Wilson entered the book as Downs saw his powerful angled header sail wide. Talbot’s Traynor looked to have headed into his own net before the ball was somehow cleared off the line and McKenzie entered the fray to replace Downs. |

The final minutes will be the stuff of Arthurlie legend. Derek Anderson converted a last minute penalty to send the home team into the lead only for Martin McGarvey to net the equaliser in the 94th minute. Some minutes later Sandy Miller on the line raised his flag and all hell broke loose as the goal was chopped off for an infringement on the line by coach Johnny Millar who had apparently kicked the ball before it went into touch. With the goal disallowed McGarvey, Hobbs and Millar all saw red for their protestations with not one Talbot man even shown a yellow for their role in the fracas. The referee’s name? John McKendrick – remember it well! |
