MATCH REPORTS FROM SEASON 2000 - 2001 Arthurlie 2 Quigg, McKenzie Arthurlie got of to a flyer in the group with by all accounts a fortunate win against an experimental Burgh side that included four trialists. The visitors played the better football in the first half but didn't convert any of their many chances. Arthurlie edged into the game in the second half and went ahead through a Quigg penalty on 75 mins. With Johnstone pushing up in search of the equalizer the home side wrapped up the points with a Derek Rhodden goal. St Anthony’s 1 After a shaky start Arthurlie eased to another 3 points
against a 10 man St Anthony’s side at Tinto park tonight. After
a scrappy opening spell with neither side creating any chances of note,
the ants took a shock lead on 26 mins when Terry Farrel made a hash
of a pass back and allowed the striker half time 2-1 Arthurlie.
Benburb 2 This was definitely 2 points dropped as Arthurlie dominated a cracker of a cup tie but just couldn't get the winner their play deserved. Four goals, two penalties, three red cards, a female assistant and the referee diving in the box!!! First up I must say it was the worst display from match officials i have ever witnessed, both sides suffered from some incredible decisions from the female assistant, as she did not get one offside correct. The clown on the other side wasn't much better, at one point flagging Arthurlie offside form a throw in!! Despite this handicap both sides produced a cracker that began when a swift Arthurlie attack ended with a Gilles shot from 22 yards that was touched round the post after only 9 minutes. Next up was Bonnar McKenzie who missed an absolute sitter on 22 mins after fine wing play from the impressive Montague, the wingers frustration was plain to see and he was among a clutch of players booked early on. There was a feeling that Arthurlie would rue the missed chances, and so it was that Benburb scored with a very controversial goal on 27 minutes. A clearance from Stuart Allison hit the referee on the back and rebounded to a bens player, his pass picked out an offside (not an offside looking) Jimmy Creaney who ran on to round Cormack and pass to Tinney who was also offside and he stroked home the opener. Another 2 bookings resulted for dissent towards the visually impaired linesman, including one for Arthurlie substitute Jim Carse (ex Ayr Utd). The home team held this lead at the interval, due in no small part to the outstanding Wingate at the heart of the defence. The second half was only a minute old when Arthurlie
won a free kick on the left wing, Gilles swung in a perfect ball and
Stephen Quigg rose unchallenged to head past the keeper. As the Arthurlie
fans acclaimed a fine goal the cheers were cut short by the linesman's
flag and after a discussion with the referee the goal was chopped off.
Was it offside? no way, Handball? Never, Foul on the keeper? No one
was near him; there was a real feeling of injustice as this was the
same linesman who allowed the
Arthurlie 1(Quigg pen) Arthurlie began far the stronger side, attacking Lok's new look 4-4-2 with a gusto; so much so that Ronnie Lowrie elected to move Sammy Johnston further forward, thus pushing the outstanding Kevin O'Neil back into the midfield role he has played all season. Lok's first real chance arrived in the 20th minute when Sammy Johnston won a tackle inside 'Lie's half, and laid the ball off to Andy Main. Main played it back to Johnston and he found Lynch in space on the right, but the resultant cross from the ex-Dunipace man just evaded John Hendry. A moment later, Lok had a goal ruled out for offside and both Hendry and Main followed that up with efforts that didn't trouble Cormack. Arthurlie began to come at Pollok, sensing a victory that would almost assure them of qualification from this Group Of Death, and they were able to panic the Newlandsfield boys into unforced errors. Indeed, Arthurlie made the breakthrough in the 36th minute. Fabiani lost possession to Arthurlie, allowing Stephen Quigg to make his way into the box. His shot at goal was unorthodox to say the least, and as it trickled goal wards, it hit the grounded and prostate Mario Pacitti on the arm, resulting in a soft - but probably justified - penalty. Quigg converted it to give the Lie a 1-0 lead. Shortly before half time, Clark with Barnes well beaten headed a Gilles free kick onto the bar and in stoppage time McWilliams hit a looping cross/shot towards the back post the almost evaded Cormack, but ultimately drifted out for a goal kick. Half time: Arthurlie 1 Pollok 0 Two minutes into the second half, Kevin O'Neil hit an excellent ball through the middle to Drew McWilliams and he hit a ferocious shot at Cormack, who saved well. Balance score wise was restored in the 53rd minute thanks to a brilliant finish from Drew McWilliams. He received the ball 25 yards out on the right hand side and hit it first time high beyond Cormack for an early goal of the season candidate. (1-1) Sammy Johnston hit a powerful shot goal wards in the 62nd minute but Cormack was equal to it and with 20 minutes to go, Parker miscued for 'Lie in acres of space. Back at the other end, Lok could have gone 2-1 up when Cormack was adjudged to have handled outside the penalty area, but Main's free kick cannoned back off the crossbar. Ryan McDonald then missed a point-blank range header for Arthurlie as both sides continued to be wasteful with opportunities. In the dying minutes both sides missed gilt-edged opportunities, but perhaps a 1-1 score line was a fair reflection of proceedings. Glencairn 3 (McNeil 2,Smith) Arthurlie got off to a dream start after only 8 minutes
when on form hit man Bonnar McKenzie latched on to a Kenny Gilles through
ball and as the keeper hesitated, he struck a low shot into the far
corner for a 1-0 lead. Glencairn then took over the game and ran the
Arthurlie defence ragged with a number of raids down both wings. Arthurlie
fielded Miller, (not John), in goal due to work commitments for McKie
and Cormack, and the new man was made to work after 17 minutes when
Glens striker Smith headed goal wards from a corner. The visitors then
had 2 incredible escapes when first on 26 minutes, a cross from the
left was missed by Miller and fell to the unmarked McNeil, he scuffed
his shot but it still looked net bound until Terry Farrel raced in to
clear off the line, hurting himself in the process. Two minutes later
McNeil was found unmarked at the back post and with the goal at his
mercy he headed the ball off Farrel for a corner. It was all Glencairn
and they got their deserved equalizer when McNeil finished off a fine
passing move on 32 minutes, his low shot giving Millar no chance. The
home side Half time Glencairn 2 Arthurlie 2 Frank Lynch totally changed the defence at half time, taking off Lasbery and replacing him with Lee Martin. Farrel was put out to his favored right back position and from the start they looked much more solid. From this foundation they went on to take the lead when Farrel showed great determination as he chased a through ball, it looked in vain but he somehow harried the defence into losing the ball which fell to the unmarked Gilles and he made no mistake, 50 mins 3-2. Derek Rhodden was brought on and he showed well, managing to score the vital fourth goal on 71 minutes, with a quick turn and shot in the box. Despite being 2 goals down and a man short, Glencairn continued to make chances and they took one of them on 80 minutes when McNeil’s deflected shot left Millar helpless. The game was far from over at this point but McKenzie finished it with 5 minutes to go when he ran onto a Farrel pass to shoot home and tie up the points. Glencairn should have scored with 2 minutes remaining but the linesman ruled the ball had not crossed the line, despite everybody else in the ground seeing that it clearly did. All in all quite an eventful day at Southcroft Arthurlie 8 (Montague, McKenzie 3, Coyle, Rhodden, Fulton,
Farrel) Arthurlie made Renfrew pay for denying them a place in the league cup knockout stage by thrashing them in an embarrassingly one sided Abercorn league match today. They were helped on their way when the linesman ruled that a Montague shot had crossed the line when he crashed a shot off the bar from inside the box after 19 minutes. It looked miles away from a valid goal but Montague gratefully accepted it. The 'frew were still debating the decision a minute later when McKenzie deflected a Hammond clearance past a stranded Monk to make it 2-0. Lee Martin was immense in the centre of the Arthurlie defence but he was the victim of a shocking tackle from Ross in the centre circle on 25 minutes, Ross received a straight red card and Martin needed lengthy treatment before he could continue. A man short and 2 goals down Renfrew just couldn't cope as Arthurlie looked as if they would score with every attack and they made the score 3-0 after 31 minutes when Martin McGarvey danced past the defence and chipped to the back post for Coyle to tap in. In a rare attack, Shearer netted for Renfrew right on half time when he headed past Cormack to give his team some hope. Half time Arthurlie 3 Renfrew 1 Derek Rhodden replaced the strangely subdued Montague at half time and he was yet to touch the ball when Renfrew were reduced to 9 men, McKinnon picking up a second yellow card for a shocking tackle on Grant Clark, the Arthurlie man was carried off the park and took no further part in the game. There then followed a devastating spell for Arthurlie in which they scored 4 goals in 7 minutes, it began after 53 minutes when McKenzie finished off a move involving Gilles and Kinnear. Three minutes later Rhodden looked sharp in the box when he latched on to a McKenzie pass to make it 5-1. Everybody was getting into the act and Fulton started and finished off the move of the match when he broke up a Renfrew attack and passed to Gilles, the ball was moved onto Kinnear and he swung in a cross that was matched by Fulton's run into the box, he then had the easy task of stroking the ball into the net for a 6-1 lead. Bonnar McKenzie then got his 3rd hat trick of the season when he scored number 7 on 60 minutes. The team was then changed as McKenzie came off for Ryan McDonald and Gardner came off for nobody?, this broke up the play and it wasn't until 87 minutes that Arthurlie made it 8, Farrel again kept chasing a lost cause, he beat the keeper to it and stroked the ball into he empty net. If I was a Renfrew fan I would be very upset about the 2 linesmen who got little right all day, but I would be even more upset about with the discipline of my team, that's 5 sendings off in 2 games against Arthurlie, this more than anything has contributed to the 15 goals conceded in these games.
Arthurlie 6 (Coyle, Gilles, McKenzie, Montague, Lasbery,
Gardner) Free scoring Arthurlie were at it again as they knocked the hoops for six to move into the 2nd round of the Whyte & Mackay cup. They took only 5 minutes to open the scoring when a combination of passes ended up with Thomas Coyle receiving on the edge of the penalty box, he took one touch and curled a glorious shot into the far corner that left O'Donnell in the visitor’s goal helpless. The home fans sat back and waited for the goal rush that has marked recent games but it was the 'ants who should have leveled after 26 minutes when McNamara found himself free in the box but he failed to latch on to Mulherons knock on. The rest of the half was very scrappy, the only highlight being O'Donnell's fine save from McKenzie’s free kick. Half time Arthurlie 1 St Anthony’s 0 The tie was won within two minutes of the restart and the villain of the piece was O'Donnell in the visitors goal. There didn't look much on when Gilles collected on the edge of the box but he turned quickly and fired in a shot that could have been saved, it seemed to take the keeper by surprise and he stood static and watched it sail all the way to make it 2-0. A minute later Gilles read the play superbly as he raced in to cut out a pass back from Kinnaird, as he went past the keeper he was brought down and McKenzie easily dispatched it to make it 3-0. St Anthony’s totally fell apart after this double blow and Arthurlie hit them with a quick one two again on 57 and 59 minutes, the first came about when McKenzie back heeled into the path of Montague and he smashed his shot past O'Donnell for a 4-0 lead. Next up was Lasbery who ran past a static defence to get onto a Montague corner and powering in a header that gave the keeper no chance.
The visitors had real trouble clearing their lines and it was becoming almost comical as time and time again they gave the ball away when under no pressure. Arthurlie managed one more when Gardner lost his marker and his header flew past the keeper for number 6 on 72 minutes.
Benburb 2 (Creaney, Swift) Arthurlie earned a point after a hard fought draw at Tinto park in this league match in front of about 600 spectators. They enjoyed the lions share of the possession but found it tough to turn that possession into goals. The first real chance came after 8 minutes when some clever play between McGarvey and McKenzie led to the striker finding himself with time and space in the Benburb box but he rushed his shot and it blazed over the bar. Benburb had a chance when their No 11 fired in a shot that Cormack did well to parry on 15 minutes as the game went from end to end. Kenny Gilles looked to have put Arthurlie one up with only 5 minutes of the half remaining when he fired in a long range effort that beat the keeper but smacked off the bar and out to safety. The midfielder did get his goal though three minutes later when he latched on to a through ball and expertly fired past the keeper. Half time Benburb 0 Arthurlie 1 The home side started the second half looking for the equalizer but aware that a second 'lie goal would kill the game, so the first 15 minutes of the half was fairly even. The game was totally turned on it's head in the space of the next 5 minutes in which the bens scored two goals. The first was the goal of the game as the ever-impressive Swift raced down the right wing, shrugged off Coyle's challenge and crossed for Jimmy Creaney to head past Cormack and into the corner of the net. The second by comparison was a scrappy effort as the Arthurlie defence failed to clear the danger and allowed Swift time and space to knock home. With only 25 minutes remaining and a goal down in a match they had dominated we were about to find out more about this Arthurlie side than we have in the previous 4 easy victories. They responded positively and equalized after 71 minutes when Kenny Gilles flighted in a super free kick for Lee Martin to head home his first goal of the season. The match got a little tousy as both sides went for the winner but in the end both sides had to settle for a point each. Glenafton 6 (Neil,McLaughlin pen,Campbell 3, No12??)
Half time Glenafton 2 Arthurlie 0 Most people in the ground expected a rout but it was
Arthurlie who came out fighting and scored on 51 minutes when Derek
Rhodden ran through to expertly beat Smith to give his team some hope.
Arthurlie pushed for the equalizer but with huge gaps left at the back,
they always ran the risk of losing a goal on the counter attack. This
happened on 62 minutes when Campbell netted after a mistake from Allison
in the Arthurlie goal after he was left badly exposed. Still the 'lie
would not give up and they scored again on 70 minutes when Lee Martin
headed home a Gilles free kick to make it 3-2 on 70 Cormack's sending off was the turning point, although
it has to be said Lee Martin did him no favours with his defending.
It might sound like sour grapes but I doubt if Glenafton will go far
in the competition due to their poor defence. One thing that is standing
out every week, this Arthurlie side
Arthurlie 3( Gilles pen, Rhodden 2) Abercorn Premier league Sat 14th October 2000 Arthurlie continued their good start to the league campaign with a 3-1 win over a Maryhill side that, despite playing well, just never got the breaks at crucial times. The match was only one minute old when Rhodden latched onto a McGarvey header and as he raced in on goal was brought down by 'hill keeper Chalmers, the resultant penalty gave Kenny Gilles his eighth goal of the season as he sent the keeper the wrong way. Despite this early blow Maryhill were looking sharp on the break, with Billy McLafferty causing major problems for the 'lie defence, and if Watters had connected with his cross on three minutes the match might have had a different outcome. With both sides creating chances it was no surprise when after 15 minutes Rhodden again found himself in the box and as he prepared to shoot he was brought down by Campbell for another penalty. The defender was booked for his trouble but Gilles aimed for the same corner as he had put the first and the keeper made a great save to deny Arthurlie a dream start. Rhodden was coming in for some abuse on and off the park, as most people wearing red and black thought he dived for the second penalty, so much so that Campbell was shown his second yellow card for an off the ball tussle with the striker after only 20 minutes. Deeko rubbed salt into the wounds by scoring a fabulous goal on 32 minutes, he collected the ball on the edge of the box and as Chalmers came off his line he lobbed it over him for a 2-0 lead. With only two minutes of the half remaining Maryhill's Sherry danced past a couple a Arthurlie defenders and fired in a shot that Cormack could only parry, it fell to Watters and he slotted it home, this would have been a crucial goal but the supporters cheers were short lived as the linesman ruled it had been offside, another one of those baffling decisions that infuriate players and fans alike. Half time Arthurlie 2 Maryhill 0 The second half was only seven minutes old when Kris Kinnear provided the pass for Rhodden to clinch the points, he found the striker again unmarked in the box and he fairly rattled in his second and Arthurlie's third. Chalmers in the 'hill goal had been limping since the first minute clash with Rhodden and he was substituted before the play restarted. With the game won Frank Lynch sent on McKenzie, Coyle and Clark for McDonald, Martin and Lasbery. The changes almost had an immediate effect when McKenzie crossed for Coyle who's shot was just saved on the line. Maryhill though showed tremendous spirit and they pulled a goal back on 77 minutes when good play down the right wing resulted in Hamilton smacking a shot past Cormack. The goal turned out to be only a consolation for the 'hill, as despite their efforts in the last thirteen minutes, Arthurlie held firm and still sit at the top of the table.
Arthurlie 1(Fulton) Whyte & Mackay cup 2nd round Sat 21st October 2000 Arthurlie picked the worst match possible to turn in their worst display of the season, (New Cumnock included, so anyone who was at that game knows how bad this was). A very scrappy first half with Pollok looking slightly the better team passed by with little for the fans to talk about, McPhee's offside effort the only thing to even merit a mention. Half time Arthurlie 0 Pollok 0 The second half was only three minutes old when Madden sprung the offside trap and rounded Cormack to make it 1-0. Rhodden missed a great chance a minute later when he volleyed a Gilles free kick inches wide, it turned out to be a vital miss as Pollok doubled their lead 5 minutes later as McWilliams scored a carbon copy of the first. A bad day turned into a nightmare for Kenny Gilles when he was red carded for an off the ball incident on 65 minutes, and he wasn't in the dressing room before McPhee made it 3-0. With 20 minutes remaining Arthurlie were given a little hope when Rhodden was fouled in the box and Fulton made no mistake from the spot kick. This hope was smashed two minutes later when first the linesman flagged for another off the ball and Lee Martin was red carded and two minutes later 9 man 'lie looking shambolic at the back conceded again to round of a very bad day.
Johnstone Burgh 1(Brolly) Abercorn premier league Sat 04th November 2000 Arthurlie failed to regain top spot in today's damp squib of a league match at Keanie park and instead now trail Johnstone Burgh by 6 points. The first half was pretty dire with Arthurlie shading it on possession but again failing to create any real clear cut chances, the only ones in the opening period being Barrett's shot over the bar from Kenny Gilles's through ball after 12 minutes and Rhodden's similar effort 7 minutes later. They should have taken the lead on the half hour mark when Tommy Coyle found himself in the box with only Donahoe to beat but he shot straight at the keeper and Barrett blazed the rebound over bar. Most Arthurlie fans will hope that Barrett is short of match fitness, as he has not showed at all in his first two matches for the club. With the club desperate for goals to get the confidence back it looks like 15 goal striker Bonnar McKenzie is keeping the bench warm because of something he has said rather than done, and he must find it hard to watch as the frontline misfire each week. Half time Johnstone Burgh 0 Arthurlie 0 Burgh had been totally ineffective in the first period but whatever George Walker said at half time had the desired effect as they took the game to Arthurlie from the kick off. Indeed they could have scored after a minute of the restart but Alan Frater screwed his shot wide when he looked a good bet to score. Only another five minutes had passed when David Brolly somehow missed an open goal after springing the offside trap and rounding Dave Cormack 30 yards from his goal, with the goal at his mercy and a team-mate screaming for him to pass for the tap in, he shot from 18 yards and the ball trundled past the post. The strikers face was as red as his new Burgh shirt but he made amends on the hour mark when he pounced on a knock down and smashed a shot past Cormack to give his side a deserved lead. It was all Burgh, with most of the good play coming through right back Zander Ryan, and after one of these raids down the right wing Cormack had to look smart to turn a Frater shot round the post on 65 minutes. Arthurlie made a couple of changes to try and turn the match with McKenzie and Montague coming on but despite making the odd half chance in the last 20 minutes they never really looked like scoring. There is no love lost between these two sides, (does anybody like Burgh?), and in the last 10 minutes there were plenty of heavy tackles and how both sides finished with 11 men was quite amazing.
Arthurlie 2 (Barret, McKenzie pen) Abercorn premier league Sat 11th November 2000 Today's match at Dunterlie was the type to give Graham Speirs something to gloat about, with thirteen booked and three sent off in a match which was spoiled by a typically over zealous Central Region Referee. Right from the start it looked as if there could be goals galore, with both defences looking a bit shaky. Petershill went in front in the 13th minute when a long punt by Dempsey was flicked on by Dallas, John Conroy chased the ball into the box, Cormack came off his line but hesitated, allowing Conroy to nick the ball past him and knock it into the empty net. The Peasy went two up in the the 20th minute when Jim Meechan, who had stayed up field after a corner, got onto the end of a good move involving Conroy, Dallas and Cameron to lash the ball home with a fine left foot volley from twelve yards. Stuart Allison, who was a bit fortunate not to get his second booking in an incident involving Scott Cameron, did get his marching orders in the 34th minute when he hacked down Stevie Dallas as he sped away from him towards goal. HT Lie 0 Peasy 2. Arthurlie started the second half looking like the team who had the extra man, and their pressure was rewarded in the 57th minute when a long up field punt was headed in by John Barrett, whose looping header from the edge of the box found the top corner. Petershill were on the rack, but managed to restore a two goal advantage in the 65th minute when Dallas beat the offside trap and chipped over Cormack from 25 yards. There then followed a mad ten minutes when Porter, who had been booked for answering back to some abuse from the 'Lie dugout, got his second yellow, (possibly a straight red) for gesticulating to the 'Lie bench after Dallas' goal. The 'Lie pulled a goal back almost immediately when Mackay needlessly pulled down McKenzie in the box, with the Arthurlie man picking himself up to slot home the spot kick. Straight from the kick off there was a crunching tackle between Barrett and Dempsey, with the 'Lie man coming off worse. Arthurlie had used their third sub just before, so Barrett had to try and play on, but lasted only five minutes before limping off to leave the 'Lie with nine men. Scott Cameron blew a chance to tie up the points when he was sent clean through when a Fulton clearance rebounded nicely for him, but Cormack got down well to save at his feet. Dallas was lucky not to be sent off for downing Cormack as he made a clearance, then Rhodden was lucky also not to get a red card when he went in high and late on McLaughlin at the other end. Cormack was sent packing in the 85th minute when he floored Dallas after the Peasy striker beat him to a high bouncing ball, ten yards outside the 'Lie box. Digger Fulton, who had started in his usual midfield role and was switched to sweeper in the second half, now found himself donning the gloves and going in goal, where he had three good saves as the Peasy blew a few good chances to tie up the match. The referee obviously doesn't get out much, or at least he certainly wont after this as he writes up his reports.
Arthurlie: Cormack, Kinnear, Clark, Gillies, Allison, Martin, McGarvey, McKenzie, Barrett, Fulton, Coyle. Subs: Gardner for Kinnear, Green for Coyle, Rhodden for Martin. Lasbery and Montague not used. Booked: Kinnear, Allison, McKenzie, Green, Rhodden. Sent off: Allison, Cormack.

Arthurlie 3 (Own goal, McKenzie pen, Green) Abercorn premier league Sat 25th November 2000 Arthurlie came back from a dreadful start, two goals down in 15 minutes, to win three precious points with a display full of fight and determination in this league match. It looked like it was to be Pollok's day when Arthurlie keeper Cormack was left badly exposed after only 14 minutes, David Graham finding himself in acres of space in the box as he turned in a cross from Neil Diamond. A minute later and Diamond again crossed from the right for Gary Madden to score at full stretch. At this stage it looked bad for Arthurlie but they got back into the game 3 minutes later when Paul Green, making his first start of the season, kept possession well in the box and cut back a ball that was knocked into the net by one of the Pollok defenders. With their tails up, the rest of the half belonged to Arthurlie as they camped inside the Pollok half in search of the equaliser. Half time Arthurlie 1 Pollok 2 Derek Rhodden had a great chance to level the scores when he was one on one with Hanley but the Pollok keeper was quick to narrow the angle and made a good save. The Pollok defenders were finding it hard to cope with Paul Green and when the striker collected the ball in the box he was surrounded by three defenders, he clipped a deft pass through to Martin McGarvey and he was brought down for a stonewall penalty. Up stepped Bonnar McKenzie to send Hanley the wrong way for his 16th goal of the season and tie the match at 2-2. McKenzie was booked for his over zealous celebrations but there was worse for Pollok's Sammy Johnston as he saw red for an off the ball elbow on Martin McGarvey. Arthurlie didn't have the numerical advantage long as McKenzie stupidly earned himself a second yellow for failing to retreat the full 10 yards at a free kick. Green had already had a hand in the two Arthurlie goals and he made this match his own when he scored one of the goals of the season with twenty minutes left. There looked little danger to Pollok when the striker took the ball from Montague on the right wing but Green had other ideas and he floated a sublime ball over the stranded Hanley into the top corner of the net for a goal fit to win any match. The match was far from over though and five minutes later Pollok had the chance to salvage a point when Ged Gardner pulled down Jimmy McPhee in the box for another spot kick. Up stepped John Hendry to try and tie the match but his kick was superbly saved by Cormack much to the delight of his team mates. There was still more action in this pulsating game as Arthurlie tried to kill some time on the touchline, Mark McWilliams let his frustration get the better of him and he was shown a straight red card for his wild lunge on Digger Fulton.
Arthurlie 4 (Green, McKenzie2 1 pen, Rhodden) Abercorn premier league Sat 16th December 2000 Another vital three points for the 'lie were won in a canter as they brushed aside the challenge from a physical but uninspiring Blantyre side in this league match at Dunterlie. The first half was mainly played in the middle of the park and it was fiercely competitive with a number of heavy challenges going unpunished by the man in black. Goal scoring chances were few and far between and it was going to take something special to break the deadlock, so please step forward Paul Green. On 35 minutes the striker got the ball on the edge of the box and stepped inside his marker, he looked up and curled a left foot shot into the top right corner of the net for another memorable goal. Blantyre almost leveled matters right on half time when Donaldson flashed a shot over from 8 yards that took Cormack by surprise. Half time Arthurlie 1 Blantyre 0 The visitors took the game to Arthurlie at the start of the second half and they spurned a couple of good chances to get back in the game, down in some part to the fine form of Dave Cormack in the home goal. With the game becoming more open the chances started to come along more frequently and Blantyre had a narrow escape when first Mennie saved Rhodden's shot and as the rebound fell to Terry Farrel his shot looked a goal all the way but somehow the keeper touched it over the bar for a corner. Ten minutes into the second half and Arthurlie increased their lead when McKenzie found Rhodden in the box and the little striker was bundled over as he prepared to shoot, up stepped Bonnar McKenzie to score his 17th of the season. Mennie in the Blantyre goal was having a fine game and he broke Rhodden's heart when he turned over his diving header after the move of the game involving Fulton and Montague after 65 minutes. With 15 minutes remaining the 'lie wrapped up the points when McKenzie expertly hooked home his second after collecting a long Ged Gardner pass. The final minutes were torture for the Blantyre defenders as they were pulled all over the park by the pace of Montague, Rhodden and McKenzie, and the strikers combined on 82 minutes to make it 4-0, Rhodden finishing off Monty's cross from the right wing.
Shotts 0 Abercorn premier league Sat 23rd December 2000
'All I want for Christmas is another three points', was the cry from the Arthurlie fans, and the team delivered due to Derek Rhodden's seventh minute strike. The game started well for Shotts as the Arthurlie defenders took time to come to terms with the wide open spaces of Hannah park, but they failed to create any clear cut chances and fell behind to the 'lies first attack. Terry Farrel latched onto a clearance and fired in a shot from the edge of the box that was deflected by the Shotts defence, the ball spun high into the air and Derek Rhodden was the first to react and he smashed a volley past Colquhoun for a fine goal. With Shotts desperate for points, they forced a series of corners midway through the half as the 'lie struggled to clear their lines, finally ending the threat when Cormack saved well from Sinclair's header. The keeper punted the ball up the park and a couple of passes later Martin McGarvey fired in a shot that was well saved by the keeper. Shotts should have equalized on 40 minutes when they sprung the offside trap and raced down the left wing, Cormack missed the resultant cross and the ball fell perfectly to McNally but he somehow managed to blast it over from eight yards. Half time Shotts 0 Arthurlie 1 The match was becoming very scrappy with very few chances for either side and this suited Arthurlie with the one goal lead, and they were content to sit in and try and hit Shotts on the break. Twenty minutes into the second half and Arthurlie again had Dave Cormack to thank when he pulled of a double save from the Shotts strike force after a quick attack down the right. Arthurlie fans, and I include myself in this, have been quick to slag the keeper this season when his mistakes have cost us vital games, so credit were credit is due, he had a great game today, well done big man!!!
There after the home side created very little and with Stuart Allison immense in the back three, Arthurlie easily held on to record a vital win. This was by no means a classic match or a brilliant performance from Arthurlie but they ground out three points at a difficult away ground and this was the most important thing as they chase Johnstone at the top of the table. Arthurlie 2 ( Lynn, Rhodden ) Abercorn premier league Sat 3rd Feb 2001 Arthurlie kept up the pressure at the top of the table after a fortunate win against a luckless Neilston side at Dunterlie today. In the very first minute the visitors almost scored when Cochrane's header was cleared off the line by Stuart Allison with Cormack well beaten. With Neilston controlling the midfield they created chance after chance but crucially failed to put one away. Most notable misses coming from Cochrane who shot wide after springing the offside and Carse who shot straight at Cormack after a mix up in the home defence. The Neilston fans could not believe their team was not well in front and they looked on in disbelief when the game swung Arthurlie's way on the half hour mark. First up Wilson argued with the referee after being booked for a foul on Lynn, the ref showed him one yellow card for the foul and a second for the chat back. Two minutes later, as so often happens when a team has been under severe pressure, Arthurlie scored with their first attack. Derek Rhodden held the ball up on the right and managed to get past Fallen, he cut the ball back to Gary Lynn and he smashed it past Hewitt for a 1-0 lead. Half time Arthurlie 1 Neilston 0 The half time team talk must have been good in the away dressing room because manager Brian Stevenson found himself standing with the Neilston fans after questioning the referee's first half decisions. He would have been annoyed on 52 minutes when Urquart was slow at coming out and allowed Rhodden to run through as the rest of the defence looked for offside. The striker took his time and as the keeper advanced, slid the ball into the right hand corner for a 2-0 lead. Neilston though refused to give up and should have reduced the leeway when Cochrane again missed from 18 yards on the hour mark. Ten minutes later the game took another twist when the linesman spotted an off the ball elbow by Gilles and it was now 10 against 10. Noble had came on as a sub and he thought he had scored when his shot beat Cormack a minute later, but to his dismay Allison cleared the ball on the line. From the resultant corner Neilston did score when Robert Anderson leapt above everybody else and powered a header goalwards, it smacked off the bar and dropped behind Cormack who knocked it into his own net as he tried to collect it. It was now game on but Neilston's chance of a point were lost when Noble was shown a straight red card for a wild two footed lunge on Terry Farrel with 15 minutes to go. Arthurlie held out for a precious three points but if Neilston had taken even half of the chances they created they would have ended Arthurlie's title hopes. Arthurlie 4 (Fulton 2 pens, Gilles, Lynn) Arthurlie battled to another three points after throwing away a two goal lead in the first 45 minutes at Dunterlie today. Right from the kick off the 'lie were all over Shotts and Rhodden went close on 5 minute when he picked up a loose ball and forced a good save from the keeper. We only had to wait another two minutes for the first goal to arrive and when it did it was the first of many controversial decisions from referee Mr. Boyd and his assistant . Ex lie star Stephen McNulty was adjudged by the linesman to have handled the ball in the box as he tried to clear a home attack, it was a tight call but the ref went along with it and it didn't bother Digger Fulton as he blasted it high into the net for a 1-0 lead. Deeko was tormenting the Shotts defence and he linked well with Gary Lynn on 12 minutes, the strikers shot just going wide. A minute later and Shotts first attack nearly bore fruit when a high ball dissected the lie defence and Higgins volleyed just wide with Cormack scrambling to cover. The second Arthurlie goal arrived seconds later when Rhodden sprung the offside trap and as he tried to round the keeper, the ball spilled to Kenny Gilles and he gleefully knocked it into the unguarded net. Shotts were given a lifeline after 21 minutes when a vicious corner was handled by Ged Gardner and McInally rattled home the resultant spot kick to reduce the leeway. The visitors grew in confidence as a result of the goal and the started to pressure the 'lie back line, which didn't look very comfortable, so much so that they began making unforced errors and it was from one of these that the scores were leveled. Lee Martin, in his first game back, tried to trap a harmless pass on 43 minutes but he let the ball go under his foot and Porter ran on to easily beat Cormack. At the half time whistle it was Arthurlie who were glad to reach the safety of the dressing rooms as Shotts were the team looking the more likely to score again. Half time Arthurlie 2 Shotts 2 The second half started with more of the same from Shotts as the sensed the game was there for the taking, and the had Arthurlie on the back foot for the first 15 minutes without creating a clear cut chance. The game then went very scrappy and Frank Lynch made a double substitution to try and get Arthurlie going again, Barret replaced McDonald and Stephen O'Neil came on for the tiring Clark. Barrett's height upset the Shotts backline and Arthurlie started making the odd chance now that they had a real target man to play to. With twenty minutes remaining Barret knocked the ball down to Rhodden and as he bore in on goal he was brought down by Kelly for another penalty, Shotts No2 was booked for his protest and Digger again smashed the ball high into the net for a vital 3-2 lead. There then followed the worst decision from a referee I have seen for a long time, Rhodden received the ball 30 yards out and as he sped towards the goal the Shotts right back made a superb tackle to win the ball and clear the danger, to his and everybody else's amazement Mr. Boyd gave a foul to Arthurlie and showed the defender his second yellow card. Shotts were stunned and Porter was shown his second yellow 5 minutes later after a derogatory remark towards the equally inept linesman. The points were wrapped up on 86 minutes when Gary Lynn made it three goals in three starts when he took a pass from Barret and smacked a shot high into the top left hand corner.
Maryhill 1 (Nelson) Arthurlie came out on top after a hard fought win at Lochburn park saw them do the double over a struggling Maryhill side this season. In a close first half there were very few chances with most of the play coming in the bruising midfield area, Arthurlie were winning a lot of the ball and looked the more likely to score, especially from one of the number of corners they forced. 'Hill keeper Thomson was static a number of times as Gary Lynn and Kenny Gilles took turns at swinging in some dangerous crosses and as a result he put his defence under real pressure. Lynn almost scored from a free kick awarded just outside the box on the half hour but his effort just missed the target. Ryan McDonald should have scored five minutes before the break when a slack defensive header resulted in the ball falling to him in the box with the keeper out of position, the big striker rushed his shot and the ball screwed wide. Arthurlie did score however and it was a cracker, Gary Lynn, who had troubled the home defence all day, curled a free kick round the wall and low into the net right on half time for a deserved lead. Half time Maryhill 0 Arthurlie 1 The second half started with Maryhill going all out for a leveler and it duly arrived on 48 minutes, Cormack looked hesitant at a cross ball and this left Clark backtracking to get a clearing header in, the defender was out jumped by Watters and his knock down fell perfect for Nelson to knock it high into the net. The home side now had their tails up and went in search of more goals, and they put the Arthurlie defence under some pressure for the next 10 minutes. Arthurlie then started to get more of the ball and Rhodden missed a gilt edged chance to put his side in the lead on 56 minutes, the striker produced a trick on the edge of the box that left 2 defenders for dead and put himself through on the keeper, he delayed his shot until the keeper had went to ground but scooped the ball just over. Both sides were desperate for the win and this showed when they both made double substitutions that had the emphasis on attack, McLafferty and Fisher coming on for the home side and Barret and McKenzie for the 'Lie. However it was the Arthurlie duo that combined to win the match with only 6 minutes remaining, Bonnar McKenzie raced after a ball that looked the defenders all the way, he somehow got a foot in and the ball broke down the wing, he raced after it and his cross was perfection as it cut out the keeper and on rushing defenders alike, there were three Arthurlie players at the back post but John Barret reacted first and he dived full length to head home a spectacular winner. A great win that was made even sweeter with the news that Burgh's bottle crashed at Brig O'lea. How does that song go? I love the sound of breaking glass. Arthurlie 3 (McKenzie 2,Lynn) Three points were snatched in the last minute when Bonnar McKenzie looped a header over the advancing Mitchell in the Larkhall goal to send the Arthurlie fans into raptures. The last third of this game contained almost all the action and a 0-0 scoreline looked most likely after a dour first half in which the only half chance fell to the 'lies McGarvey on 13 minutes, his shot was saved by Mitchell. Larkhall defended well as they set about trying to exorcise the memory of that 4-0 thrashing at Gasworks park earlier in the season, it was a pretty effective game plan but it's not the sort of football that will have the fans turning up to watch. Half time Arthurlie 0 Larkhall 0 Kenny Gilles almost got the 'lie off to the perfect start after only two minutes of the restart but his powerful shot was parried by Mitchell, the rebound broke to Montague but he found the angle too tight and the chance was gone. After watching almost an hour of defences on top, the next 15 minutes were a feast of goalmouth action as the fans were treated to 4 goals and numerous other chances, both sides it seemed decided to throw caution to the wind and go for the win. First up was Bonnar McKenzie, the striker who worked tirelessly all day with nothing much to show got his reward when he headed home another super delivery from Gary Lynn on 58 minutes. Arthurlie sensed that now was the time to put the game beyond doubt and they put the Larkie's defence under some severe pressure. The second goal had to come soon but when it did it shocked the home fans into silence. A high punt on 64 minutes was totally misjudged by Terry Farrel and Thistles Watret ran on, drew Cormack and slotted home of the far post. It got worse for Arthurlie 9 minutes later when the best move of the match finished when Larkhall's Gardner fed Watret and the big striker lobbed the advancing Cormack to put his side ahead. The Thistle fans had little time to celebrate this goal though as Arthurlie went straight up the park and equalized. Gary Lynn, who has been nothing short of sensational, marked the week he put pen to paper with the club with a stunning 25 yard right foot volley that beat Mitchell all ends up. The young left back should have tied up the points two minutes later when Digger Fulton surged into the box and cut the ball back to him, his shot looked net bound but as the keeper dived the wrong way it cannoned off his legs and out to safety. Most people in the ground had settled for the draw, but one person who hadn't was McKenzie and he popped up right on full time for a precious winner.
Blantyre 2 ( Donaldson, Davidson) Arthurlie turned up the heat in the title race when they ground out another three points today at Castle park despite a really spirited display from the home side. The opening spell contained nothing of note and we had to wait until the 18th minute for some real action. Ged Gardner swept in a cross field pass that was knocked down by John Barret, the ball broke to Gary Lynn and he smashed it into the corner for a 1-0 lead. With this goal Arthurlie started to control the game and it was a real surprise when Blantyre equalized after 34 minutes, the 'lie failed to clear their lines and a quick pass in the box allowed Donaldson to slot past Cormack. From the kick off Arthurlie regained the lead when Terry Farrel put in an inviting cross that was laid off by Thomas Coyle for Bonnar McKenzie and the striker made no mistake. Blantyre were shocked with this reply and almost conceded again after Arthurlie carved out two great chances inside a minute, the second one was knocked for a corner and from this Arthurlie did score. Gary Lynn curled in the ball and there was Bonnar McKenzie unmarked and he easily headed home for a 3-1 lead. It now looked bleak for the 'tyre but they were given a lifeline just before half time when Grant Clark shouted for Lee Martin to leave a through ball, Martin obliged but Clark lost his footing and the ball bounced through to Davidson, and he coolly took the ball round Cormack and tapped it into the open net. Half time Blantyre 2 Arthurlie 3 Ryan McDonald came on for Lee Martin at the start of the second half and he formed a three pronged attack as Frank Lynch decided to go for more goals, and after some of the defending in the first half this was no bad idea. On the hour mark Arthurlie won a free kick in Gary Lynn territory but it was McKenzie who almost got his hat-trick from it, his low net bound shot was knocked on to the bar by one of the Blantyre defenders. There was a nervy look to the 'lie defence and indeed they had to rely on an outstanding save from Dave Cormack when the big keeper got down to touch a low curling shot out for a corner. Rhodden was then put on for the ineffective Paul Green, but still Arthurlie could not get the goal to make the game safe, and while there was only one goal in it there was always a chance for the home side. There were a couple of scary moments for the 'lie defence but they managed to hold out and headed back to Barrhead 5 points clear at the top. Bonnar has grabbed his chance back in the team with both hands and was again outstanding today, but also a mention for Ged Gardner, he was a rock in the centre of the defence and really took control when all around him were struggling. As one fan said at half time, Arthurlie have the most potent defence in the league this year!!! and with this defence you never get a dull moment
Arthurlie 2 (McDonald 49, Rhodden 88) What is it they say about teams that win when they are not playing well? That is surely the what most of the home fans were asking as they left Dunterlie after watching Arthurlie steal the three points against Glencairn. Any neutral would have been hard pushed to say which team was going for the title as the visitors set about a re jigged Arthurlie defence that had Stephen O'Neil playing left centre of a shaky looking back four. They should have scored after 20 minutes when McNeil wasted a great chance after he was put through on Cormack, he only managed to hit a weak shot and the chance was gone. Two minutes later and O'Neil somehow got back to save a Dodd's shot on the line with his keeper well beaten. From the resultant corner Glencairn did score, and it was a cracker, Dodd's swung over a perfect cross that Murray met with a sweet right foot volley that flew into the right hand corner for a deserved lead. This goal shook Arthurlie who despite having plenty of the ball were struggling to make any real chances and when they did threaten on the half hour McDonalds control let him down. Half time Arthurlie 0 Glencairn 1 It was all change in the second half as first Gary Lynn stung Black's hands with a powerful free kick on 48 minutes and then Paul Green tested the keeper with a right foot strike seconds later. A real flashpoint followed a minute later when McDonald scored from an offside position, the linesman raised his flag but the referee overruled him as the ball had came off Baxter in the Glencairn box. All hell broke loose as the Glens manager raced onto the pitch to challenge the referee, he was held back by his backroom staff. Before the game restarted Bonnar McKenzie was shown a straight red card for making a gesture to the Glens dugout, and Arthurlie were down to ten men. Next up, a couple of heavy challenges on McGarvey that led to the Glencairn men being booked as the game threatened to boil over. All the stoppages suited the visitors and they started to come back into the game and could have regained the lead with 15 minutes to go, Mc Fadyen's free kick just missing. Glens McNeil then went on a run that saw his easily pass two Arthurlie men and he finished off with a shot that shaved Cormack's post. With time slipping away, Frank Lynch sent on Derek Rhodden as he tried to capitalize on some great knockdowns from his other sub, John Barret. Not for the first time it came up trumps as Rhodden popped up to score a vital winner with only 2 minutes remaining, the little striker used his pace to outstrip the chasing defenders before slotting the ball under the advancing Black and into the centre of the net
Renfrew 1 (McNally 45) Arthurlie escaped from Western Park with a point after super sub John Barret headed home a Gary Lynn free kick with only three minutes remaining. In a pretty even first half Arthurlie were given a warning of impending doom when twice Morrison found himself in space on the left but both times his first touch let him down and allowed Clark to get back and cover. Renfrew almost scored an early goal when McNally hit a shot on the turn from eight yards that was easily dealt with by Dave Cormack. Up the other end and Paul Green missed a gilt edged chance on 10 minutes when Farrel picked him out but his free header went well over the bar. McKenzie then just missed for Arthurlie when his neat turn on the edge of the box allowed him to fire in a curling shot that went inches wide with Strang beaten. Right on half time Renfrew took the lead, Morrison again found space on the left but this time he controlled well before drilling in a shot that Cormack could only parry, it fell to Tiger McNally and he dived to head home from 2 yards out. Half time Renfrew 1 Arthurlie 0 Just as in the last match, Arthurlie were transformed by Frank Lynch's ear bashing at half time and they took the game to Renfrew as they tried to get back level. They should have done just that when Lynn's inch perfect cross found Paul Green unmarked in the box, any sort of contact and it was 1-1, but the striker totally missed the ball and Renfrew breathed a sigh of relief. Arthurlie had most of the possession but were finding it hard to break down a very strong home defence and with this they brought on Barret and Rhodden to try and get something from the game. The frustration of it all got to Arthurlie manager Lynch and after speaking out of turn to Mr. McGault he was sent to the pavilion. It was from there he watched his sub John Barret score a priceless equalizer that finally broke Renfrew's resistance, and for the final minutes he must have been having kittens as Arthurlie pounded the 'frew goalmouth in search of the winner. In the circumstances this will be looked as a point won instead of two dropped. In a match that was played on a very poor surface and was dominated by the two No. 5's, Gardner for Arthurlie and McKewon for Renfrew, a draw always looked
Arthurlie 1 (Gardner) The top two in the premier league cancelled each other out after a tense affair at Dunterlie park, both sides having to settle for a point after a 1-1 draw. In a scrappy first half the best chances fell to Johnstone with Andy Frame being denied on two occasions, one a superb goal line clearance from Terry Farrel. Just before half time Derek Heaton collected a Cormack clearance and his shot smacked off the bar with the keeper beaten. Half time Arthurlie 0 Johnstone Burgh 0 The second half was only three minutes old when Johnstone took the lead, David Fulton hooked a ball over his shoulder while in the Burgh half, he expected to see it collected by one of his teammates but instead it fell to David Brolly and he ran on to score off Cormack's right hand post. Arthurlie were stung by this goal and set about Burgh in search of the equalizer which arrived a mere eight minutes later. Gary Lynn curled in another dangerous corner that was met by Ged Gardner in the Burgh box, his low header just managed to get past Donahue and we were back level. The bright conditions nearly caught out the Johnstone keeper when he lost Allison's cross in the sun and was relieved to see it bounce off the top of the bar and past for a goal kick. With time running out Derek Rhodden had a goal disallowed for handball and needed treatment to his face afterwards? (work that one out), and right on full time Brolly wasted a great chance when he was again put through on the lie goal.
Neilston 0
Benburb clapped Arthurlie onto the park then played them off it as they took some comfort from ending our long unbeaten run as payback for us taking their title. This match was all about presentations and it was Arthurlie who made the first one, when very slack defending after only 15 minutes allowed Tinney to score with a free header after a corner was knocked back across the box. As often happens in these situations the champions looked very lackluster and never threatened a solid bens backline which was again superbly marshaled by Derek Wingate. Half time Arthurlie 0 Benburb 1 The second half was more of the same and the only real
chance Arthurlie made was a Terry Farrel shot on the volley from 18
yards that went just wide. Benburb on the other hand missed a hatful
of chances as they carved open the home defence time and time again,
they did score the second with 25 minutes remaining when Allison was
adjudged to have fouled the striker in the box. Cormack guessed the
right way but the power from Swift's kick gave him little chance and
the game was over as a contest Johnstone got the jitters, unlucky JB The futures Bright, The futures Sky Blue and white Championship match report Half time Pollok 3 Arthurlie 1 With the way the first half had gone it was a real surprise
to see Pollok sitting on their lead, rather than attack and go for a
big win, this tactic was fatal as Arthurlie controlled the half and
steamrollered them into submission. Lee Martin scored when he headed
home from a corner and this was the beginning of the end for the home
side. A couple of minutes later and we had the games decisive moment,
Paul Green tried to keep the ball in play near the corner flag but as
he went to ground Kevin O'Neil stamped on his leg in full view of the
linesman, he was shown a straight red card and Pollok's game was up.
With Pollok trying to reshape with ten men, Digger Fulton scored as
good a goal as you are likely to see when he dispossessed McPhee in
the middle of the park and drove at the Pollok defence before firing
an unstoppable shot form 25 yards that beat Hanley all ends up. With
Pollok wilting in the bright sunshine Arthurlie took control in the
midfield and it was only a matter of time before they got the goal they
craved. It came from Lee Martin who with only 13 minutes remaining again
out jumped Pacitti to nod home the goal that won the league. The final
whistle was met with wild celebrations from the Arthurlie fans and most
of them spilled on the park to congratulate their heroes Champion line up David Cormack, Terry Farrell, Gary Lynn (Kenny Gilles 60),Grant Clark (Stephen O'Neil 45), Stuart Allison, Lee Martin, Paul Green, Martin McGarvey, John Barret, David Fulton, Derek Rhodden (David McKenzie 70) Sub not used Coyle Bellshill 0 Arthurlie finished the season on a high note when they collected the super times trophy for the eighth time in their history, with captain Digger Fulton getting his fourth winners badge. They disposed of a stubborn Bellshill side that played some neat football but lacked a cutting edge up front, this was the difference between the teams as 'lie top scorer Bonnar McKenzie put them to the sword with two clinical finishes. His first came on 21 minutes when some clever play by Derek Rhodden allowed him to cut the ball back to the unmarked McKenzie and he's not missing this year, 1-0 to the 'lie. Minutes later Dingwall shot wide for Bellshill after Stewart had sent him away as the second division champions started to see more of the ball. The remainder of the half was quite scrappy with Arthurlie quite happy to concede possession without looking under pressure. Half time Bellshill 0 Arthurlie 1 The second half was dominated by Bellshill but despite passing well in midfield they rarely threatened a solid 'lie backline which was being marshaled by Ged Gardner, the big defender went on to win the sponsors man of the match award as he was often the rock on which the Bellshill attack crashed. Cormack was called into action on 65 minutes when Brownlie smacked in a shot that had goal written all over it, the rebound fell to Rowatt but his attempted lob was punched away by the big keeper. With only a slender one goal lead, Arthurlie needed the second to ease the nerves and it arrived with 10 minutes remaining, McKenzie chased a long punt up field that looked to be covered by Burns in the Bellshill goal, the keeper took too long to clear however and was dispossessed by McKenzie who from a tight angle curled the ball into the net to secure the cup. The strikers joy turned sour as he was red carded for gesturing to the Bellshill fans, who did their club no favors by throwing bottles and cans onto the pitch. |
