Since the situation in Tibet is still difficult, Eco Himal UK
has temporarily chosen to join Eco Himal Italy by sponsoring an education project in the southern slopes
of the Himalaya. This project started one year ago following a request by the inhabitants of Mitcha, a
little village in north west Nepal. This village is located in Jumla district, about 2,500 metres high,
in a rural area populated by Cheetri, Brahamani and Thakuri ethnic groups. The village has around 600
inhabitants and 121 children attend the primary school. The building was refurbished two years ago with
money collected by local people. The school has six classes but there are only three teachers who are
paid by the government. Local people are trying to collect enough money to pay for three more teachers,
but they can only offer a very low salary and any possibly any teacher which they are able to recruit
will leave after a short time to try to find a job somewhere else. The villagers have therefore requested
financial help for these salaries and school equipment.
After a supervision trip by Patrizia Broggi (vice president of Eco Himal Italy) in
October 2008, the associations, first the Italian and now also the English, have decided to accept the
request and has already provided 30 desks with the relevant benches, some teaching materials, and the
full salary for one teacher - hoping that the money collected by local people will then be enough for
two additional teachers. Our commitment is clear, and will continue into the future, possibly
supporting the salary of another teacher. Any help is welcome!
A desk costs £30 and the salary for one teacher will cost around £800 a year.
