Eco Himal, a non-profit association, was founded in Austria in 1992 to preserve Himalayan culture and the environment at the request of local communities,
by providing critical managerial and financial support. The objectives of the association were carefully established through research performed in Nepal
and Tibet by Austrian, Italian and British academics trained at Vienna, Cambridge and Oxford Universities. By 1994, Eco Himal had opened an office in Italy; it opened in Switzerland two years later. In England its office opened in 2002, as did Eco Himal Alpi Orientali,
the second Italian branch, based in Trento. The sister branches are independent from each other, but in some projects they join forces and work together.
Funds are channelled to the project sites through
local governmental and non-governmental organisations and their use is monitored carefully by Eco Himal. Eco
Himal is committed to give the donors detailed reports and receipts for their projects.
The first Board of Eco Himal UK was elected at the first meeting of the assiociation and elections take place every three years.
Current Board members are listed here.
