CLUB PATRON PETER SHILTON.

Ambitious Linby welcome

legend Peter Shilton. first-

On a Sunday morning Linby Ladies F.C welcomed to their ground at Church Lane, their club patron and ex Forest and England legendary goalkeeper Peter Shilton.

He was met and welcomed by club chairman Andrew Eastwood and was introduced to each team manager and spoke with all players from all of Linby’s 8 teams.

Each team was conducting their own training session and Peter looked on and took an interest in the varying training techniques from SAQ to control and passing of the ball.

He was obviously interested in the goalkeeper coaching and though not dressed for taking a training session, could not resist in getting involved and gave a few tips to the younger keepers of the club.

After meeting the players he went into the club house where he gave a short speech saying how pleased he was to become the clubs patron and felt that the club had a real friendly atmosphere and told the players that they must enjoy playing the game whether they win or loose.

There was a 20min question and answers session where the girls asked him about his career. He spoke about his time at Forest and his time with Brian Clough, his most memorable and proud moments was being part of the Forest team who won the European cup double. He declined to answer a question from young keeper Eleni Gospel “what was the most embarrassing thing you have been asked to sign” to much laughter around the room.

.

After the question and answers session Peter signed a number of autographs, he ended up staying for 2 hours and had time for everyone.

Peter was unable to attend the club’s annual presentation evening earlier in the year; he kindly re-presented the clubs Peter Shilton goalkeeping award to Eleanor Brooks of the Under 10’s.

Peter wished the club every success for the remainder of the season and was already talking about coming back in the summer in his tracksuit to run a goalkeeper coaching session. The weather on the day was not kind but still there was a good turn out and everyone enjoyed the morning and were full of praise for the time that Peter had given up to come along to the club and meet the girls. Peter made many new friends throughout the morning.

We are at the club are so pleased and proud to have Peter as our patron; he is just the perfect person for the job. The club has big plans for the future in developing the facilities at Church Lane and building on their successful junior section by introducing a strong senior section. The club is full of ambitions and can already boast that they now have a number of girls that have been selected to play center of excellence football at both Chesterfield and at Notts County.

Peter has gained more caps for England than any other player. Having been born on September 8th 1949, he made his first team debut with Leicester city in 1966 at the age of just sixteen.

During his 30-year career he played for eleven clubs, making 1005 league appearances along the way. He made his England debut in 1970 in their 3-1 win over West Germany under Alf Ramsey and six months later he helped Leicester city win promotion to the First division.

After a three year spell with Stoke City, Shilton joined newly promoted Nottingham Forest in 1977, who went on to shock the footballing world by winning the league title on their return to the top flight. Even greater success followed as Shilton was a big factor in Forest winning two successive European Cups.

In 1980 England qualified for their first tournament in ten years, the European Championships in Italy. Shilton was a big factor in this qualification, but England were eventually knocked out by the hosts

In his 125 national appearances the England team won 66 of their games. He was still playing at international level in the 1990 World Cup at the age of forty.

In the 1986 world cup, Shilton was in goal for England during the controversial quarter final encounter with Argentina, where he was the subject of "The hand of God" by Diego Maradona and then the famous individual goal as the diminutive player snaked through the majority of the England side before rounding Shilton to score.

Shilton had a brief spell in management in 1992 with Plymouth Argyle and in April 1995 made one league appearance for Bolton Wonderers at the age of forty six. The following season he spent a short time at Coventry City and West Ham United but did not play a first team match for either.

When Shilton was forty seven years old he signed for Leyton Orient in division three and made his 1000th league appearance in December 1996 in their 2-0 win against Brighton. He went on to make another five appearances for Leyton Orient before retiring from football. During his playing career Peter Shilton won PFA player of the year and has received the MBE and OBE for his services to football. In 1990 after his retirement he was awarded the Order of merit by the PFA.
