Shows often used two lanterns with on fading pictures on to of the other.

The shows would involve illustrated readings, perhaps involving two lanterns so that images could be faded on top of each other. This image is of the "Babes in the wood".

This slide would be faded on top during the reading of an appropriate poem.

Long stories (taking 40 minutes, according to the script) involved moralistic tales such as that of Gabriel Grub in which a grave digger drinks in a cemetery one Christmas Eve, and goblins appear (faded in on a second lantern) who take him down to hell. The Chief Goblin shows him scenes from his youth, so he repents of his sins, and returns.
