Here is the transcript from
the Daily Express (October 22nd 1983) regarding Kelly’s ‘Lawsuit’
-
‘ROCK STAR
Kelly Groucutt
claimed yesterday he received only a pittance while playing for a chart
topping pop group that earned millions.
Kelly, 38, bass guitarist
and singer with the Electric Light Orchestra
since 1974, toured the world four times and featured on LP’s and singles that
sold more than 10 million.
-
He says
he was paid just £11,747 a year, and is now suing the group for 25 per cent
share of its fortune. “People ask me where’s my Rolls-Royce, where’s my
mansion,” he said. “I haven’t either.
-
“I feel
I have been taken for a ride and cheated.”
-
The
star, who has three children and another on the way added: “After being with a
top ten group, I would at least expect enough money not to have to work again.
-
“Or at
least not have to worry about where the money’s coming from to support the
wife and kids”.
-
The action follows the final break-up of
ELO, led by
guitarist Jeff Lynne
and drummer Bev Bevan.
-
Kelly said he had been playing with the resident band at a
Birmingham club when
Jeff Lynne
invited him to join the group.
-
“I wasn’t asked to join as a session player – my name was
featured on LP’s as a member of
ELO,” he
said.
-
Lawyers for
Lynne and
Bevan, now a member
of Black Sabbath, denied that Kelly was ever a member of the group.
-
“He was
paid for all his activities as a musician,” they said.
-
Kelly, who is releasing a
solo album early next year which features drummer
Bev Bevan, said : “I’ll
never work again with them – it’s sad it’s ended like this.”
