In 1989, De La Rue Social Club decided to start a bowling club, due to lack of support from the employees the social club decided to open it up to the public. With the steady growth of the club, members and only a Pack 'a' Jack cabin with only 11 feet square for storage, it was soon realized that the available facilities were not adequate enough to entertain the away teams, a new clubhouse was needed! At this point it was agreed that the club would become financially independent and in 1993 De La Rue told the club to cease using its name and logo. |

It was discovered that the local area where the greens were situated was once known as 'Marnell' and that there used to be a particularly well known beauty spot in the vicinity called 'Marnell Dell'. It was then decided to resurrect this name and 'Marnell Bowling Club' was adopted. In 1996 the new clubhouse was built and was officially opened by the Mayor of Basingstoke Councilor L.T Garland J.P. The new clubhouse was able to hold six full rinks of players with plenty of room and has excellent facilities. Today Marnell Bowling Club thrives, with games being played all week throughout the summer, with BBQ's, Social events, fun days and evenings there is something for everyone. We at Marnell are always looking for new members to join our club, with friendly people and excellent coaching Marnell looks to thrive on so if you fancy trying your hand at bowls why not pop down on a Monday night and have a go. |
