The chess board is self explanatory. It was generated by the Fritz chess program.
The owls are copied from the Leeds City Council coat of arms, but they are differenced by a return to their original, uncrowned, form. I have not asked permission, following a good old Leeds tradition: the Borough first introduced the owls as supporters without asking permission of the College of Arms!
The motto Regem Capio partly echoes the “pro rege et lege” - “for King and the law”- of the City, but is the Latin for “I capture (capio) the King (regem)”. It is my rough Latin translation of “I check mate”: a term which is derived from the Persian phrase "Shah Mat" which means, literally, "the King is ambushed" (or "helpless" or "defeated"). It does not literally mean "the King is dead", although that is a common misconception. (Wikipedia)
The top “crest” owl is represented as holding the captured King of the motto!
