New Clubs in Leeds

We at Alwoodley are very keen to promote Chess beyond the narrow isolation of a single club. We would like to see more Local Clubs, Women's Clubs, Immigrant Clubs and Youth Clubs.

There are many thousands of individuals in Leeds who can play Chess and would enjoy the excitement and drama of over-the-board Chess but feel a little uncertain of how to get involved, of how to find a Club in which they feel at home and so on.

The purpose of this page is to act as a focus for these people. Perhaps you are one? We hope that it will encourage you just to get in touch in an informal way, to tell us a little about your chess experience and interests.

It may be that there will be enough such players in a small area - Headingley, for example - to form a small club. There may be enough players in an Immigrant Community to form a team - Poles and Filipinos are both internationally famous for their chess, for example. There may be enough women to form a team of their own. Youth have a page of their own here.

What we at Alwoodley can do in such cases is to provide the initial point of contact, information and encouragement during the start-up period when so many enterprises need some nurturing, and perhaps create a website, share some equipment, accommodation and even a few players.

Of course if the numbers do not add up, or it is your preference, then we would be delighted if you should wish instead to join us in North Leeds.
