Richard Palliser joined the club, soon to become an IM and Yorkshire's strongest player. 2000 Winners of LECL Div 3 for the C team. Champions of LECL Mini League. The First Team finished Runners-up (losing finalists against Leeds). 1987 First-time Winners of the Team Lightning Curtain-raiser in September 1986. 1985 The first 5-man team entered the National Club Championships. 1984 The first 5-man E team entered the LECL, finishing Div 4 Runners-up. 1982 The first 5-man D team entered the LECL, finishing Div 4 Runners-up in the first year of Div 4. 1981 The first 5-man C team entered the LECL, finishing Div 3 Runners-up. 1980 First-time Winners of LECL Div 2 for the B team. 1979 The first 3-man team entered the LECL Mini League, finishing Champions in the Mini League's first year. 1977 The first 5-man B team entered the LECL, finishing Div 3 Winners in the first year of Div 3. 1976 First-time Champions of LECL Div 1, beating Leeds 3 - 2 in an end-of-season play-off. 1974 The team entered Div 1 of the LECL, finishing third behind Leeds University and Harrogate. 1973 The first 5-man team entered the Leeds Evening Chess League (LECL), finishing Div 2 Winners. 1963 Michael Haygarth joined the club, becoming British Champion the following two years. 1962 First-time Champions of the Leeds and District Chess League. 1961 Alwoodley first registered with the Yorkshire Chess Association (YCA). The first girl member, Janet Senior joined, who later went to Oxford University. 1958 Alwoodley entered the Leeds and District Chess League, finishing Runners-up. 1954 Informal matches at members' homes were discontinued. Friendly matches against other clubs began, winning all five in the first year. The first club rules were drawn up. Membership had dropped to 16. 1949 On Sunday May 18 the new Alwoodley Community Centre was opened and became the new venue for the Chess Club, as one of the original sections of the Alwoodley Community Association. There were 20 members at this time. The first official dinner was held this year with about 28 members and wives. Informal matches at members' homes also continued until 1954. The first match in 1942 was between Dr Cyril Jones (at home) and George Fisher. 1948 The first League and KO Club Championships were introduced. 1942 A group of Alwoodley veterans, mostly active in Civil Defence during WW2, founded the club. They played informally at each others' homes. top
