WELCOME to the exciting world of over-the-board CHESS!

This HOME page is to tell you about our club. But feel free to join any others. We meet in friendly rivalry all the time. The more the merrier. Here are the answers to your questions about us:

  • Are you any good? We were joint first British Chess Federation Club of the Year 2004. We regularly win a lot of silverware. For details see the Club History.
  • How good do I have to be? All players welcome. Our highest graded player is International Master Richard Palliser and we have others who are rated well under 100.
  • Can children play? Yes, we are one of only two clubs with a section just for youngsters. (The other is Copperworks.) More.
  • When do you play? Wednesday evenings, at 7.00 p.m.
  • Where are you? Alwoodley is in North Leeds, not far outside the Ring Road. Map
  • What is the place like? We have the largest premises in the league, able to host up to 30 games at a time. There is also a lounge bar where we relax and chat together after matches.
  • Are you well equipped? Best in the league! Wooden veneered boards, digital clocks etc.
  • Can I get graded? Yes, you get a local grading for official games, and an ECF grade if you wish to join them through us.
  • How many people are in the club? We are the second largest club In Leeds, with an average of around 40 members.
  • Any extras? We also have a small library of chess books that you can borrow from.
  • Sounds good. Now how do I find out about the other Clubs? No Problem. Go to the Leeds Chess Association Page.
  • What is the state of play in the Leagues at the moment? See the links on the right.
  • How do I get in touch? Come along any Wednesday at 7.00. Or phone our President Mike Dow (0113) 2673632 or Secretary Stuart Johnson (01943) 466847 for any more details. Or email via link on the left. Once Stuart knows your playing ability you should have a place in a team within a week or so.
  • To be honest I would rather fancy starting my own team locally with some friends. FANTASTIC!! We are very keen on encouraging new teams. The Mini League only needs 3-player teams. And so does the NEW LEEDS RAPIDPLAY TOURNAMENT. Email Chairman/WebMaster Dylan Morgan to see if we can help you to get things started with advice, equipment loans, player loans etc. More
