HARPENDEN SOCIETY AWARDS SCHEME

Our objectives as a Society are to stimulate public interest in the local area, to conserve Harpenden_s character and charm and to promote high standards of planning and architecture. The annual awards are designed to further these aims, and to mark our appreciation of those who show care and concern for the way Harpenden develops.

Awards are made for developments or services by a local resident or organisation that have made a substantial contribution to the enhancement of the town. Developments may include domestic and public or commercial buildings. With the latter, consideration will be given both to architectural merit and to the social and environmental qualities of the building - for example, how accessible it is for the disabled. To qualify for an award, a development or service must have been completed during the previous year.

The Society_s premier award is its Plaque, which is given to a building or development where it can be displayed. The Plaque is only presented if there is a development of sufficient merit to justify this; no Plaque has been awarded for the last two years. The Society also gives Environmental Certificates for other developments which set a high standard, and for commendable services, and may send out additional Letters of Commendation for small projects which deserve recognition.

Nominations for the awards scheme, which has now been running for 25 years may be made by members or any interested party, using forms available from the awards scheme organiser. Forms are circulated with the January newsletter.
