THYROID PROBLEMSI was diagnosed as having an overactive thyroid gland when I was 14 in 1975. This hereditary condition known as hyperthyroidism, can develop after a trauma ( in my case, my fathers sudden death )!It has many symptoms these include: excessive sweating, palpitations, trembling hands, weight loss, agitation, get up and go all the time, not being able to relax, I liken it to being on a high permanently. These are just some of the symptoms and not everyone has the same symptoms. Another symptom of this condition can be bulging or protruding eyes, I did not suffer from this distressing condition myself. I was on tablets to control this condition, and these helped keep it under control for many years. The only time that I had to come off medication was when I had my four pregnancies, and each of my children was tested for hyperthyroidism at birth. I had to have a sub-thyroidectomy in 1990 as my gland had started to swell and was wrapping itself around my windpipe. I am not on any medication at the moment. I have a 1 chance in 3 of the remaining piece of thyroid going underactive ( hypothryoid ), but I am hopefull that this will not occur in the immediate future although I have been given some information recently that it is not a matter of if it will go under but when it will go under. I think that having a positive outlook will see me through. When you are suffering from hyperthyrodism, you lose rather than put on weight, no matter what you eat. I did not have to keep an eye on what I ate and at the time this was great not having to worry about my figure!!! after I had surgey, I was uneducated as to the right eating habits and so now I am a bit overweight. If there is anyone out there who has this type of surgery, I would love to hear from you as I dont know of anyone else who has had this done. About 2 years ago I became a member of the THYROID FOUNDATION. I recieve a newsletter quartely and it keeps me up to date with anything connected to my condition. They also have a number of very informitave leaflets, and are a very friendly organisation. I have listed their address below for anyone who may want to find out more about thyroid conditions, if anyone who has this condition and would like to chat to me about it then by all means E-mail me!
