Community Forums

It was apparent from the 'Community Spirit' Session of the Tune In meeting that most people agreed that communication needs to be better between various community groups and perhaps there is a possible need for centralising how members of the community communicate with one another.

Deepcut has its own Internet forum where members of the community discuss issues that are important to them. Residents use the forum to participate but maintain a distance if they want to. It is felt that just because people do not actually get actively involved with community events does not mean they do not have valid input/feedback to offer and they are as entitled to their opinions as much as the person who is very active. Therefore, internet forums have also been made available for Frimley Green and Mytchett residents to encourage more participation of residents in all three villages.

The demographics in Deepcut because of Dettingen Park is quite different from that of Mytchett or Frimley Green, and there is a need to find ways to bridge that gap and hopefully the use of an Internet forum is the way to do that. This will enable individual groups to integrate their efforts, communicate better and generally work and liaise more efficiently with one an other. It also raises awareness in the wider community that there are groups that cover a diverse number of interests.

It is also recognised that not all people have access to the Internet and therefore must be kept informed of local issues by the traditional methods such as leaflet drops.

The Deepcut Forum has proven to be a very useful tool at improving community spirit, communication and cohesion. It has also helped new residents integrate better with the existing community of Deepcut allowing it to fit in much more quickly than would normally be the case. Issues that are inevitable with new developments have been dealt with much more swiftly and effectively. This is because residents have been able to communicate issues very quickly, discuss solutions openly and arrive (not all the time) at a general consensus as how to remedy identified problems. All this from the comfort of their own home. This also helps those who are active in the community because it means they don't have to go to the time or expense of leaflet drops, every time they want to communicate something.

The Society would like to encourage young people to be more community aware. In the words of Linda Creed "I believe that children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way". The Society would like to communicate with them at their level and the Internet is so on their level. Furthermore, we will not always be around to continue community efforts and there will always be a need for people to fill the shoes of those who are active. Only the young people of today will be the community champions of tomorrow.
