Stump Cross lies
just a few yards north of an ancient track which runs from Danby Beacon
to Stonegate, Lealholm.
In days gone by the track itself was known as 'Stonegate' and
joined the old road 'Lardgate' at Beacon Hill.
The cross consists
of a large stone base with a short shaft wedged into it - there
are three other pieces of the shaft
lying around it. The name 'Stump' probably refers to what remains
of the shaft as with many other damaged crosses
dotted around parts the country.
