The Face Stone Cross (looking west)
The Face Stone
stands on Urra Moor just beside a popular track which is used on
three long-distance walks
- The Cleveland Way, the Coast to Coast Walk and the Lyke Wake
Walk. Its position is just 300 yards from
the highest point on the North York Moors at Round Hill.
The Face Stone was
mentioned in a 1642 boundary document for the Helmsley estate -
it was then named
'the bounder called Faceston' on the Streete Way. I have no idea
why the crude face was carved into the stone.
