Great Ayton

Spacious greens, the River Leven and old stone cottages form the picturesque village of Great Ayton

Young James Cook (1728-1779) attended this schoolhouse in Great Ayton in 1736 and lived in the village until 1745.

Captain Cook became
one of the world's most famous naval explorers, his voyages
taking him to
Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific before he was killed
by islanders in Hawaii in 1779
