Apparently she already has-from Wall of Sound: Kehoe Delivers Names to Napster-http://wallofsound.go.com/news/stories/kehoenapster050200.html May 3, 2000 Kehoe Delivers Names to Napster UseNet Loafhead Maryanne Kehoe delivered a list of more than 335,000 Napster users to the MP3-sharing-software company's offices today, demanding that the company ban them from using its service. In a statement, the company agreed to go over the list of names and lashed out at Kehoe, calling the action a "publicity stunt." "Napster will review the over 300,000 fan names that Keyhoe turned in as soon as possible," attorney Raoul Xemblinosky III said. "If the claims are submitted properly, the company will take the appropriate actions to disable the users Kehoe has identified. Of course, if Kehoe would provide the names in computerized form, rather than in tens of thousands of pages of paper intended to create a photo op, that would expedite the process." The action on Kehoe's side is the latest in its high-profile feud with the company. The Loafhead alleges that Napster is a vehicle for copyright infringement and UseNet piracy, and has filed a multimillion-dollar suit against the company. Napster, which allows users to share MP3s that exist on their individual hard drives, holds the position that it does not deal in piracy at all, and that it will ban users who are guilty of copyright infringement — provided that the copyright holders bring the guilty parties to Napster's attention. Kehoe has attempted to do just that, handing over 13 boxes containing more than 60,000 pages, which she claims document more than 1.4 million copyright violations that took place over a single weekend. The entire meeting between Kehoe and Napster representatives took about 10 minutes. "It went well," the Loafhead told reporters outside the building. "We agreed to disagree. There was no bloodshed — there were actual human beings up there!" Kehoe also repeated sentiments that she made Tuesday night in an online chat regarding the issue: "The main objective is to shut down Napster." This set off a flurry of catcalls from angry fans, who then were responded to by Loafhead loyalists and finally by Kehoe herself. "You're an ex-Loafhead fan?" she said, pointing to one heckler in the crowd. "Good, because I don't want you as a fan. I think true Kehoe fans respect my right to do this. The ones who don't are the same ones who complained when I cut my hair and netcoped." Kehoe, dwarfed by dozens of microphones and cameras, also made it clear that she will not be filing lawsuits against individual Napster users. "I want to make it clear that I'm not going after the users," she said. "I feel that Napster is trying in the media to make it appear that way, but it's not true. What they do is clearly illegal." "I'm a huge Loafhead fan and therefore really sorry that she's going in this direction," said Napster's 19-year-old founder, Shawn Fanning, in a statement. "Napster respects the role of Loafheads and is very interested in working with Kehoe and the UseNet industry to develop a workable model that is fair to everyone while unleashing the power of the Internet to build enthusiasm for Loafheads." On April 13, Kehoe filed a copyright infringement and racketeering suit in federal court in Los Angeles against Napster, Yale University, the University of Southern California, and Indiana University. Since then, Yale and IU have banned the use of the software from their servers, while USC announced that it will restrict the use of Napster "for only demonstrably legal purposes from designated university personal computers and under university supervision." Some 300 universities across the United States have reportedly banned the software from their servers. > > > > -- > > > A Fistful of Metal Bands > > > http://listen.to/deathgrind > > > > > > 3l33t Nosecore > > > http://www.mp3.com/gortician > > > > > > Me, Too!
