This site was built solely for my own amusement.

If anyone finds anything of interest on it then I am pleased, but if you do not then don't bother to go any further or complain. Just simply go about your business, whatever that is.

I was born on a Nottingham housing estate (Cinderhill) 27/11/1939. My father was a cycle checker at the Raleigh cycle works, and my mother occasionally took in machining to make ends meet. [For more than the first half of the last century, pride ensured that working class men from my area were the sole earners ('breadwinners') of the family. Except during WW2, women just DID NOT GO OUT TO WORK. My mother, just as my father, left school at 14 in 1914, she working as a sewing machinist in the famous (then) Nottingham Lace Market and various other places until she married my father in 1930.

I failed 11+ and went to a secondary modern school. I left at 15, as did others, and it was the merest chance that I went on to higher education, for when a a teacher said "You should do O'Levels" I said ... continued
