“Ricercare” means “to seek out” and usually applies to an elaborate contrapuntal instrumental composition, a kind of freely written complex fugue or canon. Here are two such ricercares. The first is a 13-part double mirror canon. The second is a 13-part double fugue with retrograde and mirrored motion – it moves backwards with inversion after bar 58. This fugue is based on a twelve-tone theme constructed from a chain of growing intervals.  These pieces are based on two piano ricercares written earlier, but then entered into the cycle “Well Tempered Piano” op125. The both pieces are scored string orchestra divided into 6 groups: 3 first Violins, 2 second Violins, 2 third Violins, 3 Violas, 2 Celli and Double bass. The composition was commissioned by the “Ricercare” Orchestra from Tula town. It was completed on 12th of January 1983 in Moscow, and premiered on 11th of April 1983 in the “House of Composers” in Moscow by the Orchestra of Ministry of Culture USSR conducted by Vladimir Ponkin.

«Ричеркар» означает «разыскивать» и обычно относится к разработанной полифонической инструментальной композиции, род свободной фуги или канона. Эдесь два таких ричеркара. Первый – 13-голосный двойной зеркальный канон. Второй 13-голосная двойная фуга с зеркальным ракоходом – после т. 58 всё идёт в инверсии и противодвижении. Эта фуга основана на 12-тоновой теме, построенной как цепь растущих интервалов. За основу этих двух пьес взяты два фортепианных ричеркара написанных ранее, но затем вошедшие в цикл «Хорошо темперированное фортепиано» ор125. Обе пьесы написаны для струнного оркестра, разделённого на шесть групп: 3 первые скрипки, 2 вторые и 2 третьи, 3 альта, 2 виолончели и контрабас. Сочинение написано по просьбе тульского оркестра «Ричеркар», и закончено 12 января 1983 в Москве.
