 SYMPHONY No.1 "The Seasons", op30 1980 26 min. In four movements: I. To Spring, II. To Summer III. To Autumn IV.To Winter. Dedicated to the memory of William Blake.

Like many symphonies by Gustav Mahler this Symphony developed from vocal music. All the musical material comes from my* cycle "The Seasons" op28 (1979) for voice, flute, viola and harp. This sets four of William Blake's poems taken from his very early collection "Poetical Sketches" (1769-1778). The beauty of these poems is striking from the very beginning: 

O thou with dewy locks, who lookest down
Thro' the clear windows of the morning, turn
Thine angel eyes upon our western isle,
Which in full choir hails thy approach, O Spring!

The hills tell each other, and the list'ning 
Vallies hear; all our longing eyes are turned
Up to thy bright pavillions: issue forth,
And let thy holy feet visit our clime.

But there are no words or voices in the Symphony, and the four seasons are depicted by pure orchestral means. It was premiered on 8th of September 1981at the Philharmonic Hall in Riga by Latvian State Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Vassily Sinaisky. In Britain
it was played in October 1991 at the Royal Festival Hall, London, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Oliver Knussen, conductor. It has also has been played in Moscow, Gorky, Dneprodzerzhinsk (Russia), Tanglewood (on the western border of Massachusetts with the state of New York, USA) and Columbus (Ohio, USA), Taegu (South Korea) and The Hague (Netherlands).

Также как многие симфонии Густава Малера, это сочинение выросло из вокальной музыки. Весь музыкальный материал был заимствован из цикла «Времена года» ор28 (1979) для голоса, флейты, альта и арфы на стихи Уильяма Блейка из его раннего сборника «Поэтические наброски» (1769-78) Красота этих стихов удивительна с самых первых строк:

Весна, росой ресниц блесни с небес
Сквозь голубые окна утра, брось
Взгляд ангела на запад – остров наш
Всем хором прославляет твой приход!

Холмы восклицают и долины 
Внимают им; все взоры устремились ввысь
К шатрам твоим небесным: о Весна,
Приди священной поступью в наш край.

Но в Симфонии нет ни слов, ни голосов, и образы четырёх времён года отражены чисто музыкальными средствами. Премьера состоялясь 8 Сентября 1981 в зале Филармонии в Риге. Исполнители: Латвийский Государственный оркестр под руководством Василия Синайского. В Англии симфония исполнялясь в октябре 1991 в Королевском Фестивальном Зале Би-Би-Си Симфоническим Оркестром, дирижёр Оливер Кнуссен. Также исполнялась в Москве, Горьком, Днепродзержинске, (Россия) Тэнглвуде и Коламбусе (США), Тэгу (Южная Корея) и Гааге (Нидерланды).
