Dante and Dvořák

Dvořák, Janáček, Smirnov/Firsova
Dante and Dvořák presents a new Divina Commedia in music,
written for the Dante Quartet by a Russian family of composers: husband, wife and daughter.

Dmitry Smirnov's Infernois a set of devilish variations,
leading through the anguished wastes of Elena Firsova’s Purgatorio
to a gloriously voluptuous Paradiso by Alissa Firsova

Alissa, also a brilliant young pianist,
partners Krysia Osostowicz in Janáček's violin sonata and joins the quartet in Dvořák’s joyful piano quintet.

Japanese haiku has been an influential poetic form from the 16th century until the present age of twitter-inspired 'twaiku'. This succinct poetic style responds beautifully to a vocal chamber music setting; each carefully chosen word can inspire fresh musical colours. Halcyon showcases the talents of composers from around the globe, including Roberto Gerhard, Anne Boyd, Andrew Ford,
Elena Firsova: 7 Haiku
Colin Matthews and Julian Yu, with a selection of contemporary haiku settings for voice and instruments.
ABOUT HALCYON:
Halcyon is a stunning virtuosic vocal ensemble and dynamic exponent of new vocal music based in Sydney led by Alison Morgan and Jenny Duck-Chong. Since 1998 Halcyon has championed new contemporary vocal chamber music and have forged connections across the globe with composers, music centres and institutions in the search for the best of new contemporary chamber music for voice. Halcyon is the ensemble in residence at St Andrews Cathedral School in Sydney.

Soliste: Marieke Schneemann, fluit

biographical information

EnsembleCaméléon, the only group of its kind in The Netherlands, was set up by a group of friends in 2002. Most of the group are principal string players with the leading Dutch orchestras such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic and the Dutch Radio Philharmonic, and aim to bring the traditional chamber music repertoire to a broader audience. The group has as its core pairs of Violins, Violas and Celli and one Double Bass and works alongside leading composers, singers, instrumentalists, dancers and actors to enhance their exciting and innovative programming. The group also regularly broadcasts for both Dutch and German radio and have recorded their own CD of works by Mozart for the German CD label Signum. This season EnsembleCaméléon performed its debut in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam chamber music series.
