I took up the saxophone at the age of 14 in summer 1990, being taught on the alto saxophone by Mike Bowley of Worcester. I passed my grade 3 that autumn.
In November 1991 I changed teachers, to Sue Sneath in Malvern, who taught me up until I was 18. I didn't take any lessons during my university years, and my playing lapsed from Autumn 1994 until late in 2001, when at the age of 25 I bought some play-alongs and got myself back up to speed.
In March 2002 I bought my first tenor saxophone, and that has been my main instrument ever since. It lead me to go to jazz workshops by Tony Woods at Jagz, Ascot, which I have been attending since spring 2002. I have attended jazz weekends at South Hill Park in 2003 and 2004, and the Dordogne International Jazz Summer School in 2006 and 2007. As well as the workshops at Jagz, I took jazz saxophone classes at Richmond Jazz School in 2006 / 2007, and am currently attending one of the Jazz Ensemble classes there.
In January 2007 I took up the flute, on which I am now learning jazz improvisation at the Ascot workshops.
