History

In 1990 Tim formed the Suspect Sound System, playing weekly roots reggae nights at the Waterfront, Norwich. During the 1990s Tim continued to DJ at a wide range of events, both booked as a solo DJ and promoting club nights and parties as the Suspect Sound System.  During this time the music policies varied between reggae and dub, beats and breaks, psychedelic trance, funk, folk and screaming acid techno!  Throughout Tim has maintained a commitment to playing music that could be listened to as easily as it could be danced to, and to exploring music from the four corners of the globe.  He has played regular sessions in Reading, Norfolk and Bristol, and has also played as far a field as Scotland, Greece, Thailand and India.

Over 15 years of musical adventurism has given Tim a unique take on world music/global beats.  His record collection and DJ sets take in sounds from all five continents representing modern roots traditions, fusion, glocalisation and even out right bastardisation.  The last few years has seen (heard?) Tim leaning heavily in a latin direction, playing lots of mestizo, mixed with South American drum‘n’bass, and what can probably be best described as ‘Salsa-muffin and Latin Ska-hop’.  The breadth of music in his sets also makes clear the paths that Romano/Gypsy music took from India through the Middle East and diverging north and south to encircle the Mediterranean providing the currently popular ‘Balkan Sound’ in one direction and Flamenco in the other.

Equally at home playing to lounge bars or rammed dance floors Tim’s work has recently seen him playing support sets to some of the hottest bands on the global dance scene including Amparanoia, Los de Abajo, Seun Kuti/Egypt 80, Los Amigos Invisibles, Youngblood Brass Band and Sergeant Garcia.  He has been resident DJ for over ten years at the annual Karamba Drum Camps, playing 3 nights of global sounds to a highly musically educated audience (in 2006 sharing the bill with the Dhol Foundation and described as “Global beats master DJ Dubious”  and provider of “some of the best world grooves on the planet” ). He has also promoted regular events at the Old Palace Hotel in Bristol (owned by ex-WOMAD director Thomas Brooman) and DJed in the Backstage Bar at WOMAD in Reading in 2003, 2005 and 2006.   He played the Backstage bar at the first WOMAD at Charlton Park and then in 2008 he was the main DJ in the Dance Tent  there over the weekend - playing both early evening Baile Latino sessions and late night (12.30-2am) dancefloor mayhem.
