TJF Samurai Jiu-Jitsu
[link to page]
The Nottingham Trent Jitsu Club
The  Jitsu Foundation is a martial arts body with a club in nearly any university you would care to mention. It is the second largest body affiliated to the BJJA. It is a martial art reputedly refined by the head of the Hong Kong police in the first years of the 20th century based upon traditional Ju-Jitsu and kung fu. It is promoted as an all round grappling martial art and a good form of self-defence. The main techniques are based upon evasion, throwing, grappling and joint or limb locks. It is mildly competitive in that there is no real sparing. There are, however, competitions based on the candidates ability to handle consecutive attacks in a semi-freestyle manner against many armed or unarmed opponents aswell as judo based competitions. There are national and regional courses held throughout the year.

Training times can be found here on my TJF Jitsu page

Kick Fit Kick-Fit
Kick-Fit is run and trained by Richard Hudson. He is an accomplished martial artists in many fields, most predominantly in JKD and escrima. The training details are much too numerous to mention at this time so I recommend calling Richard yourself if you are interested in classes.
These include: Jeet Kune Do, escrima, karate, aikido, street wise fighting.
Richard does not, himself, teach all of these disciplines but has exemplary instructors who teach in his dojo.
Jeet Kune Do is a martial art formulated originally by Bruce Lee; the concept of which is to incorporate a multitude of fighting forms with the aim of being versed at fighting at any range including grappling.
Escrima is a Phillapino fighting art which uses sticks to simulate knife fighting. There is a strong competetive side to this art and tournaments are held throughout the country.
You can find Kick-Fit on 28-32 Carrington Street, on the top floor, just passed the train station near Nottingham Centre
The phone number is Nottingham (0115) 9242240.
Last year a student from KickFit won the Escrima world championships. Well done Tracy.
They now have their details listed on a webpage for your convenience:

Yawara Ryu
Yawara Ryu is a Jitsu style formulated and taught by Sensei Paul Lloyd Davis. Nottingham is fortunate enough to have the originator of this style on hand to teach personally. It is a diverse fighting form which not only encompasses traditional Jitsu techniques of locking and throwing but employs ranged striking and kicking techniques. Yawara Ryu has strong links to the competetive fighting style called Knock-Down Sport Budo which  involves freestyle contact fighting. Both striking and grappling techniques are legal. It is competed on both national and international levels. Most unarmed martial forms are allowed to enter the competion. I also believe that Paul Lloyd Davis has done much to promote KSB in this country.
More details can be found at http://www.fighting.co.uk/Yawara/

A university club which teaches this Korean martial art. Similar to karate in that it uses ranged unarmed combat techniques such as punching and kicking, but Taekwondo has much more emphasis on kicking and flexibility than most karate styles.

YMCA
Down at the YMCA you can do more than you think. Between the bridge clubs and scrabble groups are some seemingly good martial arts clubs. Fancing dress as a sailor is, I believe (and hope), optional.
Tai Chi - Monday - 7:00-8:30 pm
Kung Fu and Tai Chi - Tuesday - 7:00-10:00 pm also trains at the ICC, Mansfield Rd, 7-815, on a Thursday
Karate - Tuesday and Friday, 6:00-8:00 and 6:00-9:30 pm respectively
Kick Boxing - Tuesday - 7:00-9:00 pm
Fencing - Friday - 7:00-10:00 pm
I have no information about the styles and am unwilling to mention names and telephone numbers of people I don't know. For more information please contact the YMCA in Nottingham. I intend to try the karate as soon as possible.

They train in street self defence, which incorporates various styles, ranging from Ju-jitsu, Aikido, Kick Boxing, Karate. Part of our training is dedicated to sparring, ground work and the usual throws. All aspects of the training is with the street awareness in mind, so emphasis is put on your own ability to react quickly, effectively and confidently. It is varied and enjoyable, with regular gradings if required, or people can just come along to train. It doesn't matter what gender, age or how fit you are, everyone is made welcome.

Ninjitsu

Run by instructor Jim Hough this Ninjitsu style teaches defence techniques involving strikes, locks, throws and grappling. Although some ninjitsu systems get some bad media attention this class did not include any rituals, chanting or masked training. Just a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. According to the instructor they also teach weapons work including bokken, bo, jo and sai defences. It seems to be a practical jitsu system for street defence. They are based at the International Community Centre, Mansfield Road, and train on a Saturday 2:00-4:30pm. The class is about 12-15 in size and attracts a wide range of people. For more information see the advertisements at the ICC or contact the instructor, Jim Hough, on 07747 753446.
