The photographs on this website belong to my father, Albert David Griffiths (Taff) who served on board HMS Liberty during the latter part of World War 2. Earlier in the war he served on the Hunt Class Destroyer - HMS Tanatside. He served as a wireless operator on both ships.  It was his job to receive and send Morse code messages. He was on duty to receive the message announcing the end of the war in Europe and later in Japan.

He travelled to many places during his time aboard Liberty (Gibraltar, Malta, Port Said, Aden, Colombo, Penang, Singapore, Manila, Hong Kong, Saigon, Rangoon, Calcutta, Karachi, Shaiban, Lydda, Castel Benito and Marseille).

After the war he returned to his home town of Port Talbot, South Wales. Most of his career after the war was spent as a Timekeeper at the British Steel plant in Port Talbot. He met his wife - Fay Evans at the plant and married her in 1968. They bought a house together in Bridgend, a few miles away. In 1970, Fay gave birth to twin boys, Gareth and David.

My mother, Fay went back to work as a nurse in 1982 at Maesgwyn hospital in Bryncethin near Bridgend. She worked there until her retirement in 1994.

My father and mother still live in the family home in Bridgend enjoying their retirement. Gareth is a management consultant and lives with his wife, Rosemarie in London. I'm an advisory  teacher in Cardiff.

If you would like to contact us, feel free to send an e-mail. It would be great to receive a message from anyone else who served on either HMS Liberty or HMS Tanatside.
